Obituary for Dr. Jerome O. Gandt

Dr. Jerome Otto Gandt, DDS age 87, DePere, WI and The Villages, FL passed away peacefully July 13th 2018 after a short illness. He was born August 28, 1930 in Appleton, WI to the late Otto and Hedwig (Hoppe) Gandt. His father Otto had immigrated from Germany.

Jerry received his Bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Dental Surgery from Marquette University. Upon graduation in 1955, he was commissioned as a Captain in the US Air Force and was stationed in France for 2 years as a dentist where he and his wife Peggy Cusick had their first child Brian. Upon return to Green Bay they had two more children – Kathleen and Caroline.

Jerry was an environmentalist – in the 1960’s he led the fight to stop the development of the Sylvania Wilderness in Watersmeet, MI. As chairman of Save Our Sylvania Action Committee (SOSAC) he worked with many of the young PhD’s and students at UWGB as they took the US Forest Service to court and were able to stop the development. Many of them have remained lifelong friends.

On the winter solstice of 1986 he married Mary LeBrun Berndt. After retiring from his Green Bay dental practice in 1987, he and Mary started Century 21 Egg Harbor Realty in Door County and he was owner/broker until he retired in 1998. During his tenure he was President of the Door County Board of Realtors 1991-92 where he was known for his tongue in cheek newsletters. He also served as President of the Egg Harbor Business Association and Door Property Owners Association.
Jerry loved sailing, hiking, picnics and tailgating at Packer games. He loved being outdoors as throughout his life he enjoyed skiing, canoeing, kayaking, mushroom hunting, fishing, hunting and snowshoeing. Most recently, he enjoyed camping including trips around the US in their motorhome. He was in heaven camping just this June at the Wagon Trail. He loved The Villages where he would stay busy playing golf, pool, croquet and dancing at “the square”. He stayed very active up to the time of his passing making it a priority to set the alarm at 5 am each day to work out at the Kroc Center – he loved how friendly and clean it was! He was a wealth of information and it was always so interesting to join him in a discussion.
He loved being a part of a large family, especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He often told them if you want to do something, do it now. Don’t wait! He will be missed!
He is survived by his wife of 31 years Mary; his children: Brian (Leah Bowers), Madison, Kathy (Dick) DeVries, Appleton, and Caroline (John) Sedlak, Minocqua; stepchildren: Philip (Brian Kelsey) Berndt, Fish Creek, Bradley (Stacey) Berndt, DePere, Mindy Berndt, California; grandchildren: Maxwell, Spencer (and their mother Teri Berndt), Ryan, Faith, Ella, Owen, Huxley, Olive, Lawson; nieces Kay Allen and Barb Bednarowski and Seti the granddog. He is also survived by Mary’s family of 10 sisters and brothers and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Bernice (John) Allen.
Family and friends may visit from 10:00 AM to Noon on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at The Rite Place, 1580 Bellevue St, Green Bay, WI 54311. A service will follow at Noon. Please visit www.ryanfh.com to send a condolence to the family.
Jerry felt we were put on this earth to preserve it for future generations not to be influenced by the ability to put money in our own pockets. By preserving the earth the end result would benefit all. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Ridges Sanctuary, 8166 State Hwy 57, Bailey’s Harbor, WI 54202.
Our family would like to send our sincerest thank yous to the 4th floor nurses and CNAs in Bellin Hospital for all the care and compassion.
