Obituary for James Hjort

James “Jim” Frederick Hjort, 62, resident of De Pere, WI passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 30, 2017. He was born on May 8, 1955, to John “Bud” and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Warner) Hjort in Escanaba, MI.

He attended Escanaba Area High School and then married Karen (Wellman) on August 31, 1974 in Escanaba, MI at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Jim and Karen then began a 4 year adventure, as he enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1973 to 1977 as an E5 Sergeant.

His service to our country took him from the likes of Fort Knox to Fort Lewis and ultimately across the pond to Wildflecken, Germany with a newborn and wife in tow.

After his brief military career, Jim spent 36 years as a papermaker at Fort Howard/Georgia Pacific in Green Bay. During the winters, Jim devoted a lot of his free time to playing, coaching, watching, and supporting hockey in the Green Bay area.

From the spring thaw to the late fall, you could mostly find him chasing a golf ball on the local links. While most every golfer dreams of scoring a hole-in-one, he was lucky enough to chalk up two.

Even after in residing in the Green Bay area for nearly 40 years, he refused to become a fan of the hometown Green Bay Packers, but continued to root for his beleaguered Detroit Lions and was frequently quoted as hoping for only two wins each, both against the Packers.
This sarcastic, witty sense of humor speaks volumes of who he was, but even more so he was truly dedicated to supporting and guiding his family with all of their personal interests and endeavors.

He is survived by his wife Karen, son Jeremy (Rachel) Hjort, daughter Jennifer (Terry) Dewey and grandchildren Emily, Ian, and Ella.

He is further survived by his sister Ann Hjort, sister Mary (Ron) Caron, sister Catherine (Vic) West, sister Theresa Hjort, and brother Christopher (Irene Guiterrez) Hjort, mother in-law Beverly Wellman, sister in-law Lois (Jerry) Scheriff, sister in-law Pam (Ray) Drzonek, sister in-law Donna Weber, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Betsy and Bud Hjort, and his father in-law Bob Wellman.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N Tenth Street in De Pere, WI. A short prayer service will conclude the evening.

In celebration of his life and passion for the above mentioned sports, please feel free to come dressed in your favorite hockey, golf, or Detroit Lions related apparel.
