Obituary for Kathy Gehrke

Kathleen L. “Kathy” (Haig) Gehrke, 71, White Lake, passed away unexpectedly at home on November 16, 2017. The daughter of Elmer and Violet (Aho) Haig was born August 8, 1946 in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

Kathy was the youngest of three children, and graduated from Lakeland Union High School in 1964. There, she started going together with Dave Gehrke in her sophomore year. They married on November 24, 1966 in Boulder Junction.

Before retiring earlier in the decade, she worked at De Pere High School as a secretary for the guidance counselors.

Kathy had a truly open heart. Her life’s work was to mother and nurture all. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She loved animals of all kinds, especially her “grand-dog-ders.”

Kathy loved being on Boulder Lake and in the sun with a good book in hand, whether it was on the dock or the pontoon. She enjoyed walking in the woods with the dogs, sitting around the campfire with family and friends, watching “her” birds and squirrels, and the flying squirrels, who were constant evening entertainment at the cottage.

She was an excellent cook, both for humankind and animalkind. The dogs are going to lose a few pounds without Grandma sneaking them treats.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dave, White Lake, and her children, Chad (Laurie) Gehrke and Cori (Todd) Lemke, both of Sobieski. She is further survived by her sister, Priscilla Mannes, Wilmington, NC, grandchildren, MacKenzie, Jadin and Laci, and other members of her extended family.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Violet and sister Jackie.

Private family services will be held. A celebration of Kathy’s life will take place around her birthday in August of 2018. No flowers or gifts, please. Donations can be made in Kathy’s honor to your local animal shelter or humane society.

The family would like to thank the White Lake First Responders and EMTs, as well as the Langlade County Coroner, for their kindness in such a difficult time.
