Obituary for Manfred Heidorn

Manfred Edward Martin Heidorn, age 79, died peacefully on August 13th, 2017, in Columbus, Wisconsin. He was born on May 21st, 1938, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to John and Mildred (Martin) Delaney. He was christened James Edward Delaney. He was largely educated in the Catholic schools of Green Bay and went on to study at the University of St. Thomas, East Stroudsburg University, and Heidelberg University.
It was at this 14th century German university where James Edward Delaney, an American student of history and science, flourished and became Manfred Edward Martin Heidorn. He spent 40 years teaching throughout Europe, deeply affecting the lives of his students. His archives are filled with letters from former students thanking him for his creativity in the classroom.
Being multilingual, Manfred was a wonderful storyteller to all he met on his travels. He possessed great wit and charm. He loved boats and was happiest when out on the water. It was not surprising that when he returned home to Wisconsin, he was as captivated by Door County as he was as a boy.
He is survived by his daughter, Patty (Eugen Eichler) Martin Delaney, and his grandson, Marcel Martin Delaney of Bremen, Germany. In America, he is survived by his cousins, Mark (Marian) Lefebvre of Madison, Wisconsin and Julie (Robert) Mirsberger of Poughquag, New York, and their families. It was Mark who cared for Manfred when he returned home. He is also survived by friends around the world. A glass is surely being raised tonight in his memory at Tim’s Bar in Majorca, Spain.
Manfred was preceded in death by his parents and his cousin, Steven Martin Lefebvre, with whom he shared many adventures on the continent.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sam Poser for helping Manfred on his final journey and the staff of Columbus Health and Rehab who gave him such compassionate care. Manfred is being laid to rest with all of his Martin relatives in Allouez Cemetery. Ryan Funeral Home in De Pere, Wisconsin, is assisting the family.
There will be a memorial service at a later date. “In an antique bookshop I found your catechism of atrophied faiths, so I lay you to rest without your Psalter….”—Carolyn Forché
