Obituary for Richard Kordes

Richard P. Kordes, 92, of Green Bay passed away June 13, 2017. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Paul J. and Ilse Kordes.

Dick graduated from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee in 1943, where he had taken classes in drafting and architecture. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He served as a radio man aboard LST986 in the islands of the South Pacific during the height of World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Dick joined his father in the Paul J. Kordes Company, which manufactured Skid-Roll Dollies for moving heavy machinery in industrial manufacturing. His father Paul was the inventor of Skid-Roll Dollies.

Richard married Mary Alice Olsen of Crivitz and they became the parents of two children, Theodore and Kristina. Dick designed, built, owned and operated the Wolf Rock Motel near Crivitz. The couple later moved to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula where they owned and operated The Corner Store in Ahmeek for 18 years. He then designed and built their retirement home on wooded property near Ahmeek. Dick and Mary, following his vision, created a beautifully landscaped retreat complete with a large wildlife pond, woodland trails, split-rail fence and numerous gardens.

During his retirement, Dick enjoyed many interests. He was a talented craftsman and artist in many media, including woodworking, basketry, metal working, nature photography and landscaping. He shared his love of nature and the outdoors with many.
Several years ago the couple moved to Green Bay while Dick fought Alzheimer’s with Mary and his family by his side.

Dick was a quiet, independent and avid outdoorsman with a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. He is deeply missed by family and friends.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 62 years; son Ted (Kathy) of De Pere; and daughter Kristy (Ron) Blain of Texas. Dick is also survived by grandsons Eric (Angela) of De Pere; Jon (Becca) of North Carolina; great-grandchildren Jackson, Caitlin, Elizabeth and Robert; Sister-in-law Kathleen Bacon of Plymouth, WI; nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth Hilmers and Jeanette Leakey.
A celebration of Dick's life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to join the family in supporting Unity Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.
