Obituary for Vera Nelson

Vera Matilda (Forsman) Nelson, a lifelong resident of Iron River, MI, took her journey to heaven on July 10, 2018 in Green Bay, WI. She moved to Green Bay in 2009 from Iron River, MI to be closer to her family.

She enjoyed spending time with the other residence of Bay Manor Apartments, playing bingo, having craft shows, exercise classes, singing groups & so much more. She moved to Birch Creek Assisted Living in 2016 where she also enjoyed bingo, getting manicures, pedicures, and her hair done every week.

On Feb. 9th she was honored with a 100th birthday party at Birch Creek with music & cupcakes & a proclamation from the City of De Pere, WI. Some of her friends from Bay Manor were in attendance. On Feb. 11th she was honored at a luncheon where most of her family was in attendance.

She & her twin sister, Thyra, were born Feb. 11, 1918 to the late Andrew & Olga (Berg) Forsman. She married William “Bill” Nelson on Dec. 7, 1936. He preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1988.

Vera & Bill built the Nelson Cabins in Bates Township, MI & later the Nelson Motel & Café on the same property. She was a member of the Bates Modern Homemakers, a former member of the 20th Century Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, quilting club at First Lutheran Church, Bible Study, & the Red Hat Ladies.

Vera was an awarded winning artist being noted for her portraits, flowers, & fashion design. She loved crafting, ceramics, & making favors for the Iron County hospital trays every month. She was a writer of many poems & children’s books. Sewing & baking along with her painting & writing was her passion. She was an avid seamstress & made many of her children’s clothes when they were young.

If you visited her, she always put on a “little lunch” & had the amazing ability to make her lunches out of very little.

She loved to travel, spending time with her twin sister in Pacific Grove, CA in the winters. Later her and her husband spent their winters in Florida where several other people from Iron River also spent winter months.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, parents: Andrew and Olga (Berg) Forsman; twin sister Thyra Forsman DeRoshey Maître; three brothers: Robert Forsman, Roland Forsman, & Ned Forsman; grandson Andrew Adzima; & son-in-law Joe Adzima.

Vera is survived by her sister Gloria Millette of Lawton, OK; three daughters & two sons: David (Sue) Nelson, Dorothy (Leo) Fronk, Diana Adzima, Nanci (Herb) Holzner, all of Green Bay, WI & Jon (Leona) Nelson of Mequon, WI; 13 grandchildren: Scott, Douglas, & Dennis Nelson of Green Bay, Jackie (Tom) Spilman of New London, Christopher (Rose) Nelson of Mitchell, IL, AnnMarie Fronk of Green Bay, LeAnn (Steve) Krieg of Madison, Renee Italiano of Crystal Lake, IL, Tami (Mike) Meisner of De Pere, Darci (Bryan) Janssen of Green Bay, Lana Contardi of Green Bay, Elisha Nelson & Adrielle Nelson of Mequon, WI; 20 great grandchildren; & 17 great great grandchildren.

Family & friends may visit from 4:30 to 6:30 PM on Friday, July 20, 2018 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 305 N. Tenth St, De Pere.

Visitation will continue on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1301 S. Ridge Rd, Green Bay, WI 54304 from 10:00 AM to the time of service at 11:00 AM. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Earl Vorpagel, III officiating. Burial will be held on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Bates Township Cemetery in Iron River, MI.

The family would like to thank the staff at Birch Creek Assisted Living especially Karen, the second floor staff (Andrea, Annette, and Krystal) for the care & support they have given to her & her family. Also, Heartland Hospice for their help in her last months.
