Frank Wood, 82, local entrepreneur, educator and publisher, died Friday, May 27, 2011.
Frank was born in St. Ignace, MI in 1928 and remained forever faithful to his home area, frequently spending vacations and family gatherings on Mackinac Island. He graduated from LaSalle High School in St. Ignace in 1945 and then joined the army ATTRP program as a student at Houghton Tech. Upon turning 18, he became part of the regular army, serving in occupied Germany, where he got his first taste of newspaper reporting and public relations, working there with Army Military Tribunal charged with the prosecution of concentration camp cases. After completing his active army service in 1948, he enrolled at the University of Chicago, the school from which he eventually received his B.A.
In 1951 Frank married Agnes McHale and together they had 8 children. In 1953, they purchased the small Denmark Press, which after other acquisitions evolved into Brown County Publishing Company, parent to 36 different publications. Best known was the Green Bay News Chronicle, which graced the local doorsteps every weekday morning from 1978 2004. It included a small weekly column from Frank himself, the publisher, extolling the glories of life in Northeastern Wisconsin. As a business owner, Frank's style was of the avuncular sort, concerned as much about the well being of his employees as about his own bottom line. In 2004, he sold Brown County Publishing to the Gannett Corporation. In 51 years of publishing, his newspapers received many honors, including the Raymond Loeb and John Sturtevant Awards, and Frank himself was inducted in the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2004 he joined Who's Who of local business dignitaries as the recipient of Free Enterprise Award from the Green Bay Rotary.
Frank's publishing endeavors, however, were only half of his work life. Side by side with his newspaper career was an academic one. He received his M.A. in History and English from Marquette University in 1957 and with that began a long affiliation with St. Norbert College. He taught there part-time in the history department from 1957 1966, when he took a full-time position which eventually would encompass courses both in the humanities area and then, after his return to the U. of Chicago for course in their MBA program, in international business. Frank's double careers intersected nicely in the classroom where his students were always the beneficiaries of his experience in the business world and his efforts to give them a first hand experience of it. Discoveries International, a student run company on campus that markets international products, remains one of his lasting legacies at the College. St. Norbert College recognized Frank with an honorary LL.D. degree after his retirement, as a tribute both to his work for the college and his financial generosity to it.
In the personal realm, Frank was a proud father and a doting grandfather. He always insisted that marring Agnes was the best move he ever made in his life, and all who knew her readily agreed. Frank was absurdly generous with his friends and even loose acquaintances, especially with his various dwellings. The condo he owned in the John Hancock Building in downtown Chicago was host to myriads of people over 20 some years, most of whom left some indelible imprint on its red shag carpeting. And his cottage on Otter Lake, eventually donated to St. Norbert College, welcomed friends on many a weekend for relaxing camaraderie. Frank's closest friends will all remember him as one of the kindest and most generous persons they ever knew, and in death will forgive him for his stories, always too long, his jokes, not always funny, and his tardiness, inevitable on every occasion. Family, friends, employees; we will all miss you Frank.
He is survived by his wife Agnes, and their children Patrick and spouse Mary Faith, Maggie, Annie and Katelyn; Christopher and spouse Judy, Ryan and Brenden; Michael; Dan and spouse Barbara, Lily and Ethan; Rebecca; Tom; Lisa; Liam, Keara, Evan and Jade; and Megan and spouse Tom Bolin, Elizabeth and Margaret; and great grandchildren Dylan and James Powers. Preceding him in death is his daughter Mary.
