Obituary

Paul James Westphal, 89, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday, July 25, 2021. Paul was born on January 20, 1932, in Green Bay, WI., to the late Erwin and Lydia (Ihlenfeldt) Westphal. He attended St Paul's Lutheran Elementary School and graduated from East Green Bay High School in 1950. On September 13, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Judith Ellen Bell and they had three children together, Perry, Bruce, and Janet before Judith's passing, they were married for 20 years. He was a long-time active member of the Morrison Zion Lutheran Church. Paul began working at age 8 at his father's store, Westphal's Inc. which he later took over as Westphal's True Value Hardware store until it's closing in 1986. After he closed the store, he retired to the family farm. He really loved leading a slow and simple life on the farm where he grew his own food and raised his own animals. Paul loved spending time with his family and was very big into his family's genealogy. He enjoyed hosting numerous large family reunions, cooking big family meals, gardening, going to movies, reading, telling many family stories or a good joke or two now and then. Paul stayed very active playing golf, bowling, playing cards, volunteering for his church, doing Tai Chi, sit-ups, and push-ups every day, and kept his mind sharp by constantly learning new things. He also enjoyed the great outdoors, going camping and fishing with his family, loved animals and traveling. Paul was never afraid to let his opinions be known to everyone. Paul will be deeply missed by his children, Bruce Westphal and significant other, Wenli Xu, Neenah; and Janet (Robert) Buchanan, De Pere; one granddaughter, Judith Westphal, Ledgeview; two grandsons, Casey Buchanan, Milwaukee, Wade Buchanan, De Pere; and Christine Westphal. Three sisters, Carol Oldale, Judith Nevins, and Ginny (Bruce) Schulz, who all reside in Florida. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Judith Westphal; his first-born son, Perry J. Westphal; close cousin, Ruth Berens; and Aunts and Uncles. Visitation will be at Ryan Funeral Home 305 N. 10th St., De Pere, WI. from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021, followed by a service led by Pastor James Enderle.
