On May 18, 2022, Rosemary Rankin, surrounded by her loving family, peacefully passed away after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was 79 years old. Rosemary was born on April 15, 1943, to Edward and Margaret Sandrick in Whiting, Indiana. She was the oldest of their four children.
As a child, Rosemary was an excellent student, who enjoyed swimming and playing the organ at church. After graduation from Whiting High School, Rosemary earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Alverno College in Milwaukee and then a master's degree in Exceptional Education, a subject for which she had a lifelong passion, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
In the spring of 1964, Rosemary was introduced to Richard (Dick) Rankin by Father Joseph Regan, a Norbertine priest at St. Norbert College where Dick was a student. Rosemary and Dick were married on August 5, 1967. Together, they lived and worked in Phoenix, Steubenville, OH, and Duluth before finally settling in Green Bay in 1978. In 1971, when their first child was born, Rosemary began her most satisfying and rewarding role as a full-time mother and family leader for Dick and their kids Kevin, Darren, Amy, and Ryan.
Rosemary excelled at motherhood, and she was the loving and selfless foundation of her family. She hosted countless birthday parties, sewed clothes and Halloween costumes, and ensured there was always a homemade breakfast and dinner. Rosemary was a proud and passionate fan of her kids' teams, choirs, and clubs and attended hundreds of games and recitals, and drove thousands of miles of carpools.
In 1994, Rosemary returned to her calling as a Special Education teacher, joining Syble Hopp School where she provided guidance to families and a quality education to 98 special children until she retired in 2008. She took great pride in creating a detailed education plan for each of her students and cheered and supported them as passionately as she did her own children. Rosemary left a lasting imprint on every child and family, and their lives were changed because of her endless dedication and creative teaching strategies. Dick and Rosemary dedicated their lives to education, and in 2007 they were both awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the St. Norbert College Board of Trustees.
Rosemary also devoted her many talents and bottomless love to her two grandsons and two granddaughters. She looked forward to their after-school phone calls and FaceTime videos. She always treasured their visits to the family's cottage on Archibald Lake, which she filled with warmth and music and where she stocked play areas with bins of Legos and homemade doll clothes for dress-up, played board games at the kitchen table, and read books before bed.
Rosemary also gave back to her community, as a faithful volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes where she played the piano at weekday Mass, was a leader in the 40 Days of Life and Respect for Life ministries, and organized the parish Prayer Tree. She also volunteered at the St. John's Homeless Shelter and was a member of the Service League of Green Bay.
Rosemary is lovingly remembered by Dick, her devoted husband of 54 years, and by their four children and families: Kevin with wife Laura, son Jack and daughter Maggie; Darren with wife Charity, son Fynn, and daughter Emme; Amy with husband Tim; and Ryan with partner Martha. She is also remembered with great love by her siblings, Eileen (Frank) Pierce (nee Sandrick), Edward (Marcia) Sandrick Jr., and John (Kathleen) Sandrick; and by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Rosemary is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Margaret Sandrick.
Rosemary and her family are eternally grateful for the thoughtful and compassionate care delivered by the medical staff at Bellin Hospital and Cancer Center, Rennes Rehab Center, and Unity Hospice, and by her caring and generous neighbors on Pioneer Drive.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in De Pere from 4:00 to 7:00pm on May 23, 2022 and again from 9:00 to 10:30am on May 24, 2022. A celebratory Mass will follow at 11am.
Instead of flowers, please consider a donation in Rosemary's memory to Our Lady of Lourdes (the Blaise Peters Scholarship Fund or the Respect Life Ministry), St. John's Homeless Shelter, or Syble Hopp School. Thank you for your generosity.
May her memory be a blessing.
