Obituary for Susan C. Quigley

Susan Catherine (Suess) Quigley, age 81, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at Woodside Lutheran Home in Green Bay in the early hours on Thursday, February 28. She was born September 24, 1937 in Appleton to John and Ione (Steffen) Suess. She had many fond memories of her Cleveland Street neighborhood and Smith Park, which she described as “an ideal place to grow up”. Susan recalled that she loved to go fishing with her dad and had many colorful stories from when her father owned a tavern in Menasha. Susan graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Menasha. She married her high school sweetheart, Gary Quigley on August 23, 1958 in Appleton. The family grew with four sons. Though the marriage to Gary ended, Susan worked hard to raise the family and provide for her sons as a single parent.

Susan worked as a 911 Emergency dispatcher in Menasha (5 years), in Appleton (14 years), and for the Oneida Tribal Police Department (5 years). She loved the excitement of the dispatch job. Later, Sue proudly described herself as a “feisty old lady”; helpful when she was an intake counselor with the Alternatives to Violence program in Brown County.

Susan was extremely proud of her 51-plus years in Al-Anon and other twelve step groups. Though anonymity is an important part of these programs, she would want the world to know about the fantastic encouragement and wisdom she received through her life of “working the program.” Susan shared her story with countless others and was praised as an inspirational guest speaker. She faced daunting personal challenges at times and always met them with grace, humor, and a belief in her higher power.

Beyond her family, Sue enjoyed country line dancing, jigsaw puzzles, attending drum corps shows, stock car races, and gambling at local casinos. Sue took full advantage of her senior discount and took herself to first-run movies on Friday afternoons. A fun twist after she retired to her Ashwaubenon condo: Sue was an avid player of online computer games. She had a network of Travian friends from around the world.

Susan is survived by her brother, John (Lynn) Suess, Loveland, CO; four sons: Patrick (Jenny Larsen) Quigley, Amherst Junction, Michael Quigley, Appleton, John (Jill) Quigley, De Pere, Peter (Dianne Tyler) Quigley, Appleton; and grandchildren: Kate (Liz) Cousin, Sam Quigley, Erin Quigley, Kevin Quigley, and Meaghan Quigley. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins, and her special friend Val Enders who has been a great source of encouragement, inspiration ,and laughs during the past several months. Susan wanted to recognize a special relationship with Harvey Walbrun, and extend a thank you to his entire family, who opened their hearts and home to her family.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, sister Joan Kolosso, daughter-in-law Patty (Hunter) Quigley, ex-husband Gary Quigley, nephew Douglas Suess, and brother-in-law Tom Kolosso.

The Quigley family would like to thank Dr. Jaslowski and the entire team at Green Bay Oncology, also the dedicated and caring professionals at St. Mary’s Hospital and Woodside Lutheran Home.

A Celebration of Susan’s life will take place at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. 10th St. De Pere, on Saturday, April 13.
