Obituary

Audrey Lamina Hickey, 93 years old, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2022, with family at her side. Audrey was born on July 20, 1929, in Potter, Wisconsin to Wilmer ("Casey") and Florence Peters. Audrey lived in Potter until high school. Her father ran the local barber shop. Her mother took care of an extensive garden. Audrey often joked that while her friends played outside on sweltering August days, she found herself trapped in the kitchen canning fruits and vegetables with her mom. We're quite sure that's where she learned to be such a good cook. Her secret – use ingredients that you like and have on hand – a formula that has been passed down to the kids. Everyone in the family has a favorite meal or treat that she prepared for us. Likely the most notable her special potato salad (a very guarded recipe) enjoyed at all family gatherings. You knew you were family when she confided to you her special ingredient. Audrey also shared winter tales of ice skating on the frozen Manitowoc River and mile long treks to her one-room schoolhouse on snowy days where the snowbanks almost touched the power lines. When her father took a position at Brillion Iron Works, a company founded by her Uncle Butch Peters, the family moved to Brillion. Audrey attended Brillion High School and graduated in 1947. Finding her high school yearbooks and a scrapbook among boxes of photo albums has helped us with our grief as we can see the vibrant, creative woman Audrey was in her younger years. Her friends nicknamed her "Pete" and from the comments written in those yearbooks, she was quite the social butterfly. She was active throughout high school – Secretary-Treasurer of student council, Arts Editor for the Quill Times, member of the Deb Club and the Girls Glee Club. She was prom queen her junior year. After graduation, Audrey moved to Milwaukee to attend nursing school. She graduated with an RN degree from Columbia College of Nursing in 1950. She enjoyed all her medical rotations, but said surgery was the most interesting which led to one of her favorite jobs as a surgical nurse. In 1955, she married Anthony La Rosa. Tony started a business called Prize Steak Products. Audrey helped get this business off the ground, working as a nurse during the day and making meat deliveries to restaurants in the evening. Her daughter, Mary Beth, was born in April of 1960. After her divorce, Audrey moved to De Pere, WI and lived with her parents who had retired. She accepted a position in 1962 at Nicolet Paper Company and was instrumental in starting the industrial nursing department. She met her second husband, James Hickey Sr., a chemist at the company. They married on June 6, 1964. Jim had a son, James Jr. (Jamie), from a previous marriage. Jamie quickly fell into the roll of big brother to Mary Beth and to this day they still enjoy picking on each other as they share stories of their childhood. After marrying Jim, Audrey stayed home to care for her children. During this time, she was actively involved with service organizations in the Green Bay area including becoming a den mother for Jamie's cub scout troop. The one thing we can all say about Audrey is that she was never idle. She brought her energy, creativity, generosity, and caring heart to everything she tackled. Audrey will always be known for her love of animals, especially the eight Scottish Terriers she cared for throughout her life. She started out with one dog at a time, Mac Gregor, followed by MacDuff. After that, Audrey decided they needed to come in pairs: Bridget & Mac Andrew, Mac Robb, and Morgan, and finally, Cali and Max. Those dogs brought so much joy to all our lives with their playful antics. If we were to name Audrey's happiest spot in the world, it was at the cottage on Wheeler Lake. The family bought a hunting cabin from her uncle in 1976. Audrey used her exceptional design skills along with the help of a talented architect to renovate the cabin, adding additional rooms while maintaining its original look and charm. She loved puttering in the kitchen, going for boat rides and sitting on the deck, sipping a glass of wine in the evening, while the hummingbirds flitted from feeder to feeder. We have endless memories of fun family gatherings at the lake, especially once the grandchildren were born. Audrey was a gifted tailor and needleworker. In the evening, we would find her "in her cave" watching replays of her favorite soap operas while working on a stitchery project. We have an incredible collection of her needlework which we will cherish for years to come. No tribute to Audrey would be complete without mentioning tennis. When her kids were in their teens, Audrey started playing tennis. She joined singles and doubles leagues, playing at Four Seasons Racquet Club and Western Racquet Club. She loved going to tennis camp each summer, often coming back with a trophy. Of course, she made her own tennis dresses! Audrey played tennis well into her eighty's, making a comeback even after knee replacement surgery at 80 years of age. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents Florence and Wilmer Peters along with her beloved Aunt Cora, Uncle Butch, Aunt Linda, and Aunt Gerry all of whom she helped care for in their later years. Audrey is survived by her husband James Sr., daughter Mary Beth (Radue/Bill Van Beek), son James Jr. (Brenda) and grandchildren Jasmine (Riley Lester), Schaefer (Hickey) and Griffin (Hickey). A celebration of Audrey's life will take place at 1pm on Saturday, September 24th at Ryan Funeral Home, De Pere WI. In lieu of flowers, donations in Audrey's name may be made to the Happily Ever After Animal Sanctuary (https://www.heanokill.org/).
