Bernice M. (Lurquin) Vincent, 88, De Pere, died peacefully at home with her four daughters at her side on Saturday, August 14, 2010. She was born to the late Henry J. and Mary Odile (Beno) Lurquin on March 27, 1922 in Green Bay. She married Edward J. Vincent on November 9, 1946 at Annunciation Catholic Church. Edward preceded her in death on October 16, 1985.
Bernice graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1943 and worked at both St. Mary's and St. Vincent Hospitals in Green Bay. Her last nursing position at St. Vincent Hospital evolved from pediatric care to the emerging field of neonatal intensive care. She retired in 1983 after 20 years.
Bernice took great delight in hobbies, especially her collection of antique dolls. She restored many of her dolls by restringing, patching missing fingers, adding a wig or a shoe, and occasionally replacing missing body parts found at antique sales. She was an excellent seamstress and often made clothing to replicate the original garments. Her children remember her as the original recycler, cutting down and refitting clothing outgrown by the previous child or making fully lined coats out of a few remnants. Everything could be used for something else with a little work.
Throughout her life, Bernice's family and her faith were central. She is survived by seven children: Sister Mary Vincent, CSJ; Joseph (Louise) Vincent; Thomas (Carol) Vincent; Christopher (Robin) Vincent; Susan (Russell) Howes; Kathleen Hart; and Karen (Daniel) Humiston; her brother Robert (Vi) Lurquin; her sisters Margaret Garl and Mary Ann Defnet; grandchildren William (Melody) Vincent; Jessica (Sean) Yarber; Valerie (Brock) Ferguson; Stacey and A.J. Hart; Elliot, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Joseph Humiston; step grandchildren Jenny Vonsild-Vincent, Katherine (Jeff) Gough, Sandy Green, Steve Singer, Dan Singer, and Dawn Boggs; four great grandchildren and 15 step-greatgrandchildren. In addition to Bernice's parents and her husband, her brothers John Lurquin and James Lurquin preceded her in death.
