Obituary

Brucelyn P. "Brucie" Benson, 73, passed away surrounded by family on March 1, 2022. The daughter of Evans P. Jr. and Rosaline (Denny) Smith was born on March 17, 1948. On February 11, 1994, she married Anthony Benson Sr. in Green Bay. Brucie spent her career as an accounting clerk for the Oneida Nation. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, reading, Scrabble and watching races, both local and NASCAR. Brucie was a member of the Oneida Hymn Singers and volunteered for many organizations over the years. She made the best corn soup and fried bread. The secret ingredient was only divulged to one family member. Who knows when or if it will ever be given up! She is survived by her daughter; Melody R. Benson, Siblings; Joyce A. (Raymond) Johnson, Paul C. Smith, Christine R. Pociopa, and Vernon L. Smith. Sisters In-Law; Beverly Scow, Betty McLester, and Rose Benson, many nieces, nephews and cousins and very special friends Sally Salazar of Toledo, OH and Carol Elm of Oneida. Brucelyn was preceded in death by her husband: Anthony "Tony" Benson, her paternal grandparents; Evans Smith Sr .and Alice (Parkhurst) Smith-Cornelius, maternal grandparents; Jemima Metoxen-Denny and Wesley Denny. Her siblings; Carolyn Sue ("Susie") VanEnkenVoort, and Wesley Smith, Sr. Also, nieces Yotsitsyakele Smith & Yosaline Smith, Sister-In- Law Eleanora Cornelius-Smith, and Brother In-Law John "Jack" Pociopa. Family and friends may visit at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022. The Oneida Hymn Singers will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 6:30 p.m. Burial will take place March 17, 2022 at Oneida Methodist Cemetery. Thank you to the Bishop's Court staff, Heartland Hospice, Dr. Ravinder Vir, all of her caretakers, Ryan Funeral Home, the Oneida Methodist Church and the Oneida Hymn Singers, who all served her family with compassion and dignity. Thanks also to the firekeepers, and Luanne King-Skenandore, Bev Scow, Kwnwahta Smith, Synala Smith, Qualayou Smith, Yanukwala Scow, Angela Johnson, Christopher L. Johnson, Adam Johnson, Chris Pociopa, Meadow Moore and Robert, Bonnie Nicholas-Marlewski, and Laneva "Kayo" Hill, who all provided for family needs.
