Obituary

Cheryl Ann "Cheri" Martell, 78, Suamico, passed away May 21, 2024, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. The daughter of Jack and Betty (Johnson) Mitok was born April 7, 1946, in Sturgeon Bay.

She graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1964, and in 1988 earned her Associate Degree in Supervisory Management from NWTC. Over the years she served in a variety of business administrator roles for M&I Bank, Fort Howard, St. Joes Parish, and St. Mary's Parish. in De Pere.

Cheri met the love of her life in the handsome Abbot Pennings student Calvin (Cal) Martell, and after a 4-year courtship, were married in Sturgeon Bay on December 5, 1964. After a few years in Boston and Florida due to Cal's naval commitments, they settled in De Pere, WI to raise their family.

Cheri was a passionate artist, specializing in fine art and decorative oil paintings, including commissioned pieces for private individuals and businesses. She loved sharing her passion for the arts, and for more than 2 decades, proudly provided private instruction from her home studio as well as group instruction through NWTC. Cheri's dedication to her art led to numerous solo, group, and juried exhibits in galleries across Northeast Wisconsin, some of mention including Door County, the Baer Gallery at Saint Norbert College, The Weidner Center, and the Green Bay Botanical Gardens, the latter of which proudly houses two of her pieces in their permanent collection. She was honored to be recognized for her work in numerous local and national publications, her Artist-in-Residence period at the Neville Public Museum, and for receiving 'Best in Show' for her "Angels and Celestials" series which is an especially meaningful collection deeply loved by her family.

Surpassing her passion for the arts, was her deep and abiding love for her children Jon, Cale, and Tiffany, and especially her grandchildren Ethan, McKenna, Chase, Courtney, and Mariah who were her pride and joy! For the grandchildren in particular, whether it was hosting sleepovers and birthday parties, crafting with clay, epic Christmas celebrations, hand delivering frosted valentine cookies, Seroogy's eggs, and serving up Kid Cuisine dinners on toddler size tv trays, they always knew how very deeply loved they were.

Survivors include her husband Cal Martell daughter Tiffany Gniot (Quentin), Green Bay, son Cale Martell (Gina), Townsend, grandchildren McKenna Gniot, Ethan Gniot, Chase Martell, Courtney Martell, Mariah Kirchenwitz, and brother Tim Mitok, Sturgeon Bay.

She was preceded in death by parents Jack Mitok, Betty Johnson, brother Thomas Mitok, sister Jaqueline Larson, and son Jon Martell.
