Obituary

Col. Charles Dallas "Dal" Wood (USMC, RET), 91, of Green Bay passed away peacefully on December 17, 2021. Dal was born in McKees Rocks, PA on September 12, 1930 to Cornelius "Mowry'' Wood and Ann (Mirth) Wood. Dal graduated from the University of Idaho in May of 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, and later earned his Masters degree. He married Lorna Rae Hooper in Moscow, ID on June 8th, 1953. He was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps the very next day. Dal and Lorna raised their family in whatever state the Marine Corps stationed them, including California, Wisconsin, Virginia and North Carolina. Dal also served a number of overseas tours including Korea, Vietnam and Okinawa. After 25 years of service and reaching the rank of Colonel, he retired from the Marine Corps and moved his family back to Green Bay, Wisconsin (partly because of his love for the Packers). Dal was a registered land surveyor for a number of years until he began a second 25-year career as a Certified Financial Planner. He owned and operated Wood Financial until he retired in 2002. After his many years of dedicated service to his country in the Marine Corps, Dal continued to serve his community with the same enthusiasm. He played key leadership roles in the Kiwanis Club of Green Bay for many years, earning the prestigious 2012 George Kress award for his commitment to serving the youth of our community. He mentored students in creating Key Clubs at several local high schools and participated in an annual Christmas party for underprivileged children at Nicolet Elementary School. He was also a huge volunteer and supporter of the Rawhide Boys Ranch in New London, WI. Always the giver, Dal donated his bone marrow to help extend the life of his only brother, Bob. Dal's natural curiosities enveloped him in interests and activities too numerous to mention. He had a voracious appetite for books on any number of topics and was eager to share his knowledge. He also had a knack for writing and prepared a heartfelt blessing each Thanksgiving. Perhaps sensing it would be his last, this year's was especially poignant as he thanked God for everything life had given him: Our country, good health, prosperity, and most importantly, family. Some of his most joyous times were family gatherings, golfing, fishing, hunting, playing his ukulele, and traveling the entire world. At 89 years old, he did a week-long rafting trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. He spent many weekends "Up North" at the cottage and was very pleased to learn earlier this year that it will be staying in the family. He enjoyed driving his 1970 Mercedes Benz convertible and also had a strong love for his dogs, always a female black lab. Dal is survived by the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Lorna; his children, David Wood, New Bern, NC; Thomas (Patricia) Wood, De Pere; Michael (Peggy) Wood, Oneida; Douglas (Lori) Wood, Green Bay; Stephen (Kimberly) Wood, Eau Claire; and Margaret "Peg" (Tony) Brault, New Franken. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Laurel Purdy, Brent (Jennifer) Wood, Benjamin (Carly) Wood, Nicholas Wood, Cassandra Wood, Becky (Alex) Couch, Dallas Wood, Sam Wood, Alex Wood, Corey Wood, Chris Wood, Collin Wood, Ryan Dudek, Maddie (Joe) Tomandl, Nick Brault, Noah Brault and one great-grandchild, Caroline. He is further survived by his sister Molly (Joe) Pool, his brother-in-law Gump Edelman, his sister-in-law Barbara Wood, many nieces and nephews, and his loyal-to-the-end dog, Daisy Mae. Dal is preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Pamela Wood; his sister, Beverly Edelmann; and his brother, Robert Wood. Friends and family may call at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. 10th, De Pere on Monday, December 27. Visitation 3-6 PM with a funeral service at 6 PM, with Pastor Troy Murphy officiating. Full Military Honors will take place at 10 AM Tuesday morning at Woodlawn Cemetery. Please go to Ryan Funeral Home Facebook page to watch livestream of the service on Monday evening.
