At 9:06 pm on April 12, 1972 Colleen Meredith Conway, first child of the late Gregory Byron and Diane Browning Conway was born at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, WI. At 12:53 pm on March 25, 2020, Colleen died at the same hospital from complications of pancreatic cancer.
At birth, Colleen's rosy cheeks evoked the nickname "Rosie" that lasted all her life, as did the rosy cheeks.
Colleen was an avid reader, able to retain title, author, plot and major characters of the books she read. She owned hundreds of books, filling bookcases and stacked on every surface in her apartment, and in her parents' home. Books filled her iPad as well. The habit began when she was young and would defy "Lights Out" using a flashlight under the covers. During the years she worked at Barnes & Noble patrons sought her out for reading recommendations.
Colleen had a dazzling smile that lit her face and brought smiles to the faces of those she met. Her distinctive laugh drew laughter in response as she told stories. Growing up, Colleen was a writer too, composing books and plays illustrated with crayon drawings, stapled together with her name as author proudly printed on the cover. Her lively imagination conjured up friends, including "Pammy" and the Orange Bear with the Red Socks who lived in her closet.
Her three nieces and her nephew lit up her life and she loved to spend time playing, reading and talking with them. Family ski trips to Beaver Creek provided more opportunities for fun.
Colleen was an exceptional student, graduating from St. Joseph Academy in 1990. She went on to Georgetown University graduating with majors in Literature and Political Science. From there she moved to Chicago and attended Northwestern University School of Law. That degree and successful completion of the Bar Exam led to positions in large Chicago firms where she focused on litigation and research.
The pressures of practice brought a change in careers. She moved back to the slower pace of Green Bay and worked at "Barnes" as she and her colleagues called it.
Colleen was a bicyclist, riding as much as 1,500 miles in the summers. Riding with a family friend one day, he noticed that she had her riding gloves on upside down. Not embarrassed, Colleen laughed and quickly switched them.
Shopping was a major pursuit, with estate sales, vintage shops and TJ Maxx among her favorites. Etsy and eBay enabled her to fill closets, drawers and shoe shelves with bargains. The hunt was the fun, the savings the reward.
Colleen and her dear friend Keith Layton (they met on a ski lift) enjoyed adventures and quiet moments. Keith introduced her to skeet shooting—unsuccessfully--sport fishing, paddle boarding and pedigreed dog shopping. The dog was named Whisky because Keith found him in northern Wisconsin. They skied together, taking the last trip a week after she was diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Colleen was a member of P.E.O. Chapter AI, an inactive member of the Illinois State Bar and the YMCA.
She is survived by her mother Diane, brother Byron Browning Conway, his wife Alisa Minten Conway, her nieces Lauren, Kelsey and Vivian and her nephew Quinn. She is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins and many close friends.
The doctors and staff of Green Bay Oncology worked diligently to keep Colleen comfortable during her short time in their care. St. Vincent Hospital staff in ICU and on the ninth floor were invariably kind, courteous and competent. Heartfelt thanks to Daniel G. Koster, MD, for his perspective, care and solace.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private funeral Mass will be said at St. Matthew's Church at a date to be determined with burial following in Allouez Catholic Cemetery. When "Safe at Home" is lifted, a gathering for extended family and friends will be planned. Ryan Funeral Home, De Pere is assisting the family. Please go to www.ryanfh.com to send online condolences.
Please remember Colleen's smile and share your smile with many. Instead of flowers, consider honoring her with donations to Literacy Green Bay, 424 South Monroe, Green Bay 54301 or the Give a Kid a Book program of the Friends of the Brown County Library, 515 Pine Street, Green Bay 54301.
