On January 7th, 2021 Robert Don Skupas left this world the way he wanted: peacefully at his home with his beloved wife Beth of 56 years. Known by his friends as Don, he lived an extraordinary life of 91 years.
On August 11, 1929, Don was born to Antanas and Barbara Skupas on the family farm in Suamico, the youngest of three children. His parents had immigrated from Lithuania and settled in Suamico to live the American dream and provide a safe home for their children. Working on the family farm, Don learned to love farming. His passion for gardening and expert level green thumb were clear after graduating from Green Bay West.
After graduating high school, Don attended St. Norbert College and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Don was passionate about his country and the military. After graduating college, Don joined the National Guard and found his patriotic calling and second home. Enjoying the life of regimen and routine, Don excelled and quickly rose in rank. Don retired, with the rank of Captain, from the National Guard after 22 years of service, and the respect of all his peers.
After trying a couple of professions, Don finally found enjoyment in the world of insurance claims adjusting. Don made a name for himself as an adjuster due to his unique ability to comfort and methodically accommodate his clients. After competing and reaching the pinnacle of corporate insurance claims, Don and a fellow adjuster made the ultimate entrepreneurial leap of faith and the two of them used their business acumen to open their own agency, Associated Claim Service in Green Bay.
Winters in Wisconsin started to get longer and longer each year for Don and Beth. On a whim, Don and beloved wife Beth took a trip to St. Augustine, Florida in 1991. One week the first year traveling to Florida, soon led to 10 days, then to two weeks, then to a month which led to three months and then 5 months. During this time Don and Beth created many lifelong friendships and enjoyed memorable walks on the beach, endless games of golf, horseshoes, and Bocce Ball.
Don's priority in life was his family! Don absolutely adored his children and relished every opportunity to spend quality time with each of them. Don shared a love of the outdoors and fishing with his eldest son Mike. Mike and Don spent 17 plus years travelling annually to Northern Ontario to catch Don's favorite fish, the elusive Northern Pike. Don and his daughter Jennifer shared an absolute passion for the Green Bay Packers. Father and daughter attended Packers games together in the early 1980's and formed a bond that transformed their relationship for a lifetime. Through victory or loss, the alone time together and the deep, memorable conversations will last forever. Don and his youngest son David shared a love of aviation and creating beautiful things with their hands. Don and David would travel annually to the EAA airshow in Wisconsin and marvel at the plethora of unique aircraft on display and watch in awe during the live airshows. Don also displayed his passion for aviation by building model airplanes. The meticulous, time intensive hobby created a sense of calm, accomplishment and history so important to Don.
Throughout his life, Don was very outgoing and gregarious and always gave his time generously to community groups. Don was a Pack and Troop Leader for both his sons during their Boy Scout training. With a flair for acting, the ever-active thespian loved his involvement in Community Theater and later in life in the Senior Theater. Don was deeply religious and loved the Catholic faith and its teachings. Don selflessly used this passion for religion to teach Confirmation classes, to our impressionable youth, at Nativity Parish.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Beth Skupas and their children: Michael (Kris) Skupas, Jennifer (Eric) Hanson, and David (Maelea) Skupas. His four grandchildren: Brianna Skupas (special friend Rob Behm), Antanas Skupas, Shea Hanson and Anthony Skupas. His two great grandchildren: Brighton and McKenna. Nephews are Tony Skupas and Brian (Kathy) Skupas.
He was preceded in death by his parents Antanas and Barbara Skupas, his brother Ed and his sister Irene Shewalter.
