Donald J. La Rock, 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 22, 2022.
Don was born on March 21, 1932, in De Pere, WI to Edward and Ann (Morisette) La Rock. He was the oldest of four children. Don graduated from Nicolet High School in De Pere, WI. On October 18, 1952, Don was united in marriage to Phyllis De Roach at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Green Bay, WI. They had five daughters.
He began his career at Northern Paper Mill in 1954 in converting. Forty years later, he retired from James River Paper Mill in the Day Lab. During his time at the mill, Don enjoyed his noon coffee club which he continued into retirement. He could often be found at the Deerfield Diner on Saturdays with friends.
Don had an entrepreneurial spirit. He spent countless hours at "the yard" where he had a dump truck and other equipment used for his black dirt and lawn installation business. He ran that business while also working at the mill.
Don grew and sold pickles and pumpkins at "the yard." Later it became "Grandpa's Pumpkin Patch" enjoyed by the family for many years. You could often find Don at "the yard" listening to Polka music in his garage as he tinkered with his machinery and tractors.
Don was an avid gardener and member of the Green Bay Botanical Gardens. He had a knack for growing roses and many other flowers in their gardens at home.
Don enjoyed traveling with family. In retirement he and Phyllis enjoyed many bus trips throughout the U.S. His grandchildren were blessed to have their grandparents in attendance at their many sporting events and performances. Additionally, Don never missed a chance to attend concerts in the park and Polka Days.
Don cherished his faith from childhood to his final days. Don was baptized and confirmed at First United Presbyterian Church in De Pere. At the time of his passing, Don was the longest standing member of the congregation. He joyfully contributed as a member of the Men's Club and Presbyterian Pantry. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.
Don was a hard-working man who loved his family. He always had a smile and loved a good conversation. Don will be missed for his jovial personality and clever sense of humor, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and his selfless role as a caregiver to his loving wife in their later years.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Phyllis, five daughters and their husbands, Pam and Gary Bassett; Barbara and Dennis Iles; Kathy and Dan Thorpe; Annette and Jon Steinbach (Wildwood, MO) and Loree and Gary Maroszek.
