Edward Peter Korbeck Sept. 30, 1923 – July 17, 2020 His last words were "hot milk." Only fitting for a man who grew up on a dairy farm—plus I'm sure he wanted to leave us with something to laugh about. Edward Peter Korbeck of De Pere, WI, died July 17, 2020 at age 96—not quite able to beat his mother's record 108 years! He grew up on a dairy farm in Greenwood, WI, tending to his cattle alongside the dogs of his childhood, Wimpy and Lindy. He often recalled riding in—and falling out of—a Model T as a child. After he married in 1961, he moved to Milwaukee, where he became a hard-working machinist and raised his family. But he never gave up his love of the farm—subscribing to dairy publications, attending cattle auctions and visiting dairy barns at the State Fair to carefully assess the tractors and cows with a schooled eye. It was there that he taught his unsuspecting daughters that Brown Swiss cows produced chocolate milk. He was a devoted Catholic, having attended Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Green Bay. A math whiz all his life, Ed finally earned his high school diploma when he was in his 60s and learned how to use a personal computer in his 80s. Even into his 80s, Ed believed strongly in various causes—writing many letters to the editor and notes to elected officials with a shaky, yet determined, hand. He was a lottery enthusiast and enjoyed playing sheepshead and checkers. He was a jokester with a sharp wit and an infectious smile. He hated ketchup and all things with tomatoes, but ice cream—and hot milk!—were his kryptonite. His biggest joy in life? His love of the Lord. His biggest sorrow? His loss of hearing, a life-long source of frustration; while it made communication more difficult, those who took the time were luckier for having tried. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Virginia and three siblings. Surviving him are two daughters, Sharon (Don) Verbeten of De Pere and Kathleen (Terry) Gerbers of Green Bay; and four beloved grandchildren, Abby, Alaina and Steven Gerbers and Holland Verbeten.
