Ella L. Unger (Zarnke), 101, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went to meet her savior on March 2nd. Ella's remarkable journey through life began in Colby, WI on February 28, 1911 where she was born to William and Anna Zarnke, the 10th of thirteen children. Ella shared many fond memories of growing up on a farm with her twelve siblings, in particular the wonderful holiday celebrations and parties
Ella belonged to many church organizations and shared her love of music by singing in many church choirs. Her favorite musical instruments, which she played by ear, were the accordion and the piano. Ella's other interests included watching the Brewers, the Packers, and professional golf matches.
Throughout her lifetime Ella and her husband Robert travelled extensively and lived in many different places, her favorite being Chicago.
Ella's love of family was her number one priority. She will be deeply missed and is survived by two daughters: Janet (Mel) Skaleski, De Pere, and Mary Ann Unger, De Pere; daughter-in-law Dorothy Unger, Berryville, VA; two foster sons: Kenneth (Linda) Melvin, Holmen, WI and Michael Melvin, Neillsville, WI and their children; grandchildren: Ann Unger, Berryville, VA, Bobby Unger, Berryville, VA, Mark (Diane) Unger, Stephens City, VA, Stephanie (Mike) Floyd, Winchester, VA, Jeff (Diane) Skaleski, Lake Forest, IL, Traci (Chris) Coffman, Ann Arbor, MI, Heidi (Alan) Pedder, Madison, WI, Matthew (Anita) Unger, Des Moines, IA, Megan Sjostrom and fianc David Hohisel, Elkhorn, WI ; great grandchildren: Jennifer and Mark Unger, Josh, Nicholas, and Casey Floyd, Anna Skaleski, William, Catherine and Julia Coffman, Shane and Brooke Pedder, future boy and girl Pedder, and Brooklyn Sjostrom; sister Leona Williams and sister-in-law Florence Zarnke, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ella was preceded in death by her husband Robert S. Unger, son Robert A. Unger, grandchildren Glen and Carolyn Unger; parents, brothers and sisters.
Given her generous spirit and concern for humanity, Ella donated her body to the UW Medical School as did her husband.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Ella's life will be held on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 1:00 to time of service at Christ of the Bay Lutheran Church, Green Bay, WI with Rev. Curtis DeCoste officiating. A memorial fund is being established in her name for the garden at Village Gardens Nursing Home. The RYAN FUNERAL HOME of De Pere is assisting the family.
