Obituary

Florence Gray Brooks Goedjen, age 97, went to be with her Lord on October 18, 2021. She was born July 14, 1924, in Norfolk, VA, to Hazen and Ruth Brooks. She married the love of her life, Naval Lt. commander Mark Goedjen in Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, VA in 1946. They were blissfully married for 61 years residing in Green Bay. He preceded her in death in 2007. Florence attended William and Mary College where she was an active tennis player in the collegiate scene. She started a softball team when she moved to Green Bay which her mother-in-law insisted was not proper for a young lady. Florence, being a strong and independent woman, went ahead with her plans! She was also a gifted bowler and bowled on a competitive team. She worked at Naus and Pranges for years. Florence was a charter member of Pilgrim Congregational Church, played the hand bells, stayed actively involved with Pricillas Women's Group and was on numerous church boards and committees. She was always available when an extra pair of hands was needed. Florence was very active in the Green Bay Community. She and Mark were Board members of Brown County Civic Music as well as supporters of Green Bay Civic Symphony. They were active in the Town Dance Club. She has been an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for seventy years and a member of PEO chapter N for 64 years. And she could play a mean hand of Bridge! She'd kill you in Bridge, but so lovingly that you didn't know what had happened until it was all over. She was a devoted fan of the Packers and during a game you could hear her cheering a block away. Florence actively demonstrated God's love in her everyday life with every person she came in contact with. No one left her presence without knowing God loved them. Family who will forever miss her are her beloved daughter Susan McFarland, granddaughter Alyssa McFarland, niece Gabrielle Beasley, and nephews WBRogers Beasley, Rev. Battle Beasley and special family friend, Kaye Pelletier. Family and friends may gather for a service to celebrate her life at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 991 Pilgrim Way, Green Bay, on Friday October 22, at 11:00 a.m. There will be no formal visitation prior to the service. People are asked to please wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church. Ryan Funeral Home, DePere, is assisting the family. Florence's family would like to thank Heartland Hospice for their excellent care and compassion over the past few days. "Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come." Rabindranath Tagore
