Reverend Gilbert Howard Jacobs, O. Praem., age 82, a member of the Norbertine Community of St. Norbert Abbey, De Pere, WI, passed into God's eternal kingdom on June 9, 2013.
Father Jacobs was born on June 30, 1930, in the Town of Lawrence in Brown County, WI to Peter and Virginia (Van Gheem) Jacobs. His home parish was St. Boniface, De Pere, WI.
In 1948, Father Jacobs graduated from Saint Norbert High School in De Pere, WI. In 1952 he received a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Norbert College, De Pere, WI and an M.A. in Modern Foreign Languages (French) from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1966.
Upon entering St. Norbert Abbey he was vested as a novice on August 28, 1948. He professed Simple Vows on August 28, 1950 and professed Solemn Vows on August 28, 1953. He was ordained to the Priesthood on June 4, 1955 by Bishop Stanislaus Bona at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay, WI.
Father Gilbert was a faculty member at Archmere Academy, Claymont, DE, St. Norbert High School and Abbot Pennings High School. He served as Principal of Abbot Pennings from August 1, 1973 to June 30, 1977.
In 1981 he served as Associate Pastor at St. Willebrord Parish in Green Bay and was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in De Pere in 1982 where he ministered for ten years. In 1992 he was appointed Administrator at St. Wendel Parish in Cleveland, WI where he remained until his retirement in 2000. Father Gilbert was a very good and decent man, a zealous Norbertine and dedicated priest.
Fr. Jacobs is survived by the Norbertine Community; six nephews, Gerald Jacobs, John Jacobs, Ken (Nancy) Loehlein, John (Cindy) Loehlein, David Loehlein, Wayne (Edna) Loehlein; three nieces, Sharon (Ken) Soquet, Jeanne (Ken) Parizek, and Mary (Bill) Kilishek; one niece-in-law, Carol Jacobs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roy (Betty) and Harold (Rita); and one sister, Helen (Al) Loehlein; one nephew, Michael Jacobs.
The Reception of the Body/Vespers of the Dead will be held at St. Norbert Abbey, on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m. and will continue on Thursday, June 13 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Abbey Church on Thursday, June 13, at 4:30 p.m. Rt. Rev. Gary J. Neville, O. Praem., Abbot of St. Norbert Abbey, will preside at the funeral liturgy.
Burial will be in the St. Norbert Abbey Cemetery.
