Francis Joseph Tachovsky died peacefully on Saturday, September 10. He was 96. Frank was born on January 28, 1915 to Frances (Vlossak) and Joseph Tachovsky in Bethlehem, PA. He was the fifth of 8 children. As a young man he enjoyed sports: football, golf and especially playing basketball on the St. Mary's team with his older brothers Joe, John and George. After graduating from High School he was travelling to Los Angeles for a football scholarship to UCLA. Due to poor travel conditions of the time, his bus arrived late and he missed out on the opportunity. He migrant worked along the Pacific coast until he arrived in San Francisco in 1938 penniless. The United States Marine Corps advertised a $15 bonus for enlisting. On July 29 he became a Marine. He kept $5 for himself and sent $10 home to his mother.
Frank was stationed in Iceland prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After the United States entered the war, his post was moved to San Diego and saw duty in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Silver Star for action on Tarawa and the Bronze Star for Saipan. He eventually retired attaining the rank of Colonel.
While in San Diego he met Roxanna DesEnfants of Sturgeon Bay. They fell in love and married.
During the Korean War, Frank was stationed on Formosa where he trained troops for Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Chinese army on amphibious landing tactics. After Formosa, Frank took advantage of the GI bill and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and then moved back to Sturgeon Bay where Roxie's parents owned the Roxanna Hotel. Frank served as Mayor of Sturgeon Bay and then Postmaster before retiring to a life of golf.
Along the way in life, he and Roxie conceived three children: Mary, Charles and Joseph. His wife, Roxie died in 1991, his son Charles in 1995. He is survived by Mary, Joseph and his youngest brother Otto Hilary.
