Frederick Rolando Ortiz, aged 73, passed into the spirit world peacefully at a local nursing home on August 6, 2026, after a long hard battle with cancer. Fred was born on August 14, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Richard Ortiz II and Viola Jane Antone. He was a proud member of the Oneida Nation and was of the Wolf Clan.

In his early adult life following his graduating high school, he joined the Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War and was ranked as Corporal. He was honorably discharged in 1979, and after spending time traveling around the country he moved back to Chicago and obtained an associate’s degree from Moraine Valley Tech. He worked and retired from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as an asset management clerk.

Fred was always a sports enthusiast competing for many years in the Native American Tennis Association and competed in countless running events from 5k’s to half marathons. He also enjoyed century bike rides, golf, hiking and in later years took up disk golf. He loved fast sports cars and listening to all genres of music. Fred was a kind and gentle person that made friends everywhere he traveled with his crazy sense of humor.

He is survived by one daughter, Cristina “Ti Ti” Rose Ortiz, five grandchildren, Stephan, Taylor, Tyler, Mason and Bella along with numerous great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Richardo Ortiz III, sisters Thelma Shelby and Denise Jane Vigue, many cousins, nieces and nephews and numerous friends from all over the country.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Viola, five sisters, Valma Borla, Alma Mae Doxtater, Zelma “Dolly” De Chant, Marcella E. Topczewski and Libby Harden.

A private internment and cremation will be held at Ryan Funeral Home per Fred’s wishes. His sister, Denise would like, on behalf of the family, to give a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, Meadowbrook Nursing Home and Unity Hospice for the loving care you provided to our dear brother during his final days. You are and will always be a blessing.
