George R. Tochterman, age 95, passed away peacefully on June 26 after a brief period of hospice care at Rennes Assisted Living in De Pere, Wisconsin.

Born in 1931, he was the eldest child of the late Johanna and Robert Tochterman of Lincoln Street in Green Bay. The Tochtermans had seven boys and one daughter, of whom two sons remain: Bob and Matt.

George and most of the boys were heavily involved in hockey, with five of them playing for the Green Bay Hornets in the 1950s. The youngest, Matt, skated for the Badgers in the 1960s and 1970s.

George graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1949. In 1950, during the Korean Conflict, George enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served most of his time in the Panama Canal Zone and later in Louisiana, where he was honorably discharged after 4 years of service. He was also briefly in the Navy and the Army Reserve, also serving in the Canal Zone or in the continental United States.

In February 1955, George married Arlene McKeown in the Panama Canal Zone. They moved to Green Bay and had two sons, Gary and Steve. Early in 1958, the family moved to the Panama Canal Zone, where George joined the Canal Zone Police. He spent the next 22 years there before retiring as a Lieutenant.

After retiring, George and Arlene moved back to Green Bay after a year or two of camping around the country. George was active in tennis and also served as an athletic official wherever he lived, including refereeing the Packers' training camp practices in the late 1980s. George and Arlene were active in the community, loved traveling, and visited their sons' families. George and Arlene moved to Seminole, Florida, in the early 90’s.

Unfortunately, Arlene passed away in 2007, ending their 52 years together. After a short time, George returned to the Green Bay area, where most of his siblings lived, and made a life there.

He connected with Lorraine Bodart, the widow of a friend from high school. They spent several enjoyable years socializing with friends, playing cribbage, traveling, and enjoying each other's families.

George had five grandchildren. Gary and his wife Susan had two children, Robert (Aura) and Kimberly (Brett). Steve and his wife Mary had three children, Andrea (Jody) Williams, Lauren (Ned) Colegrove, and Kerry Tochterman. George had nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene, and by his brothers Jim, John, Tom, and Bill, and his sister, Dottie.

George was a fine person, a very good athlete, and lived a wonderful life until these last several months. Now he is at peace, reunited with Arlene and the family members who went before him.

Family and friends may call to Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, WI 54115, on Saturday, August 22, 2026, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., with service time to be announced. George will be buried with Arlene at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Bay Pines, Florida.
