Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Clarance Sauer (De Pere, WI) passed away peacefully on 7/18/2021. He was born in Columbus, WI on 6/15/1929 as the only child of Matilda (Tillie) Sauer and Clarence H. Sauer. After graduating from Columbus High School, he attended UW-LaCrosse where he obtained his BS degree. He received a Master of Education from UW-Superior. He also took graduate classes at UW-Madison and Indiana University during summers with his young family joining him. Jerry served time as a Seaman Apprentice in the US Navy and was a member of the National Guard of the US. Shortly after beginning his teaching and coaching career in Owen, WI he met and soon married Clara Lou Welch in Marshfield, WI on 7/24/1954. His career then took him to teaching and coaching jobs in Suring and Wild Rose, WI. He followed with High School Principal positions in Bruce and Neillsville, WI. In 1967 he accepted the HS Principal position at West De Pere where he later became the Asst. Superintendent/Business Manager, retiring in 1991. He was a member of various educational and athletic organizations throughout his working years. Jerry enjoyed many years as a referee for the WIAA, officiating high school football and basketball games and later starting track and cross country meets. These activities kept him close to students and athletics which were both important parts of his life. He loved golfing and was proud of the two hole-in-ones that he registered. He enjoyed traveling and summer camping trips which provided his family the opportunity to see many parts of the US. He and Clara continued their travels by visiting their children and grandchildren, attending as many of their events as possible. They also enjoyed several winters as "snowbirds" in Alabama. He loved to attend his class reunions, as well as those of his former students. Jerry valued his time in De Pere where he was a member of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ. He was also very civic minded and generous with his time. He was also active with various parts of the Shriners and Masonic Lodge organizations. He is survived by his wife Clara, two sons and a daughter also with their spouses: Scott (Sue) Sauer (De Pere), Lynn (William) Moore (St. Paul, MN) and Jon (Mikki Campos) Sauer (St. Paul, MN). He was a proud Grandfather to Stephanie, Aaron, Neesha, Michael, Mikkayla (Sal), Mikal, Keiron, Keegan and Jonathan. He was equally proud to be Great Grandfather to Julian, Zivon and Ezekiel. Bernice Welch survives as his sister-in-law. He was also fortunate to be an Uncle to 31 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Theresa, father-in-law Rollo, daughter-in-law Mary Crozier Sauer, one great grandchild (Isaiah), eight brother-in-laws and sister –in-laws (DuWayne Welch, Jerry and Donna Welch, Iris and Jerry Guensburg, Joan and Stanley Fait and Orman Welch) and two nieces. Friends may call from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday, July 25th at the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ, 1018 Cedar Street, De Pere, WI. A memorial Church service will begin at 3 pm at the same location. Our Family would like to offer appreciation to the team at Allouez Parkside Village 2 and Heartland Hospice for the care and genuine compassion provided to Jerry.
