Obituary

Gerald "Jerry" Vercauteren, 79, of Ashwaubenon, died unexpectedly at home on Saturday morning, December 5, 2009. The son of the late Elmer and Rose (Smits) Vercauteren was born January 25, 1930 in De Pere. On June 6, 1953 he married the former Carol Schadrie at St. Boniface Catholic Church in De Pere and she preceded him in death on December 30, 2002. Gerald served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jerry worked as a truck driver most of his life, driving for Green Bay Chicago Lines, Clairmont Transfer and Gross Trucking. He was an active member of the Moose Club of Ashwaubenon and the Ashwaubenon Retired Firefighters, where he loved spending time with his friends, especially playing cards and cooking for the guys. He loved going Up North to his cottage and playing cards with his friends and family. Jerry loved golfing, fishing, and watching football, especially the Green Bay Packers. His most treasured time was with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving and caring Dad and Grandpa, and a treasured friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include one son, Terry (Liz) Vercauteren, one daughter, Vickie (Scott) Retrum, five grandchildren, Andrea (Matt) Havlovitz, Jessica (Mark) Schmoll, Erica Vercauteren, Alisha Retrum, Nate Retrum, two great-grandchildren, Laney and Cali Havlovitz. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol, one sister and three brothers. Family and friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Visitation will continue after 10:00 am Wednesday at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, corner of Oneida Street and Cormier Road, Ashwaubenon until time of service. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Wednesday at the church with Father John Becker, officiating. U.S. Army Veteran Burial Rites will be held immediately after Mass.
