Harold "Harry" Macco, 86, De Pere passed away peacefully on March 9th, 2016 at the farm surrounded by his family and friends. Born on November 11, 1929 in East Green Bay, he was the son of Mary and Victor Macco, and a graduate of East Green Bay High School.
Harry loved projects - in his earliest years he built homes. As President of Hillcrest Homes, established by him in 1952, his business grew. He built light commercial, multifamily homes, apartments, subdivisions and Planned Urban Developments. Most recently he was passionate about his Assisted Living projects specializing in Alzheimer care.
Throughout his years, he was deeply involved in the community. He was former President of Chamber of Commerce, De Pere Rotary Club; and De Pere Industrial Development Authority. He was Past President and Founder of the Allouez Professional & Business Associates. In 2007 he received the Silver Knight Award. He served on the Board of Directors for NWTC from 2002-2004. He was awarded the Business Friend of Education Award in 2005. In 2008 he received the NWTC Education Foundation award for East De Pere Home Build Project designed to encourage young builders. He was a member of the Steering Committee and active in the restoration of the Meyer Theatre.
He was devoted to his Catholic faith and gave his time generously in religious organizations: Past President of De Pere Holy Name Deanery; De Pere Holy Name Society, past Grand Knight of the De Pere Knights of Columbus and also a member of the 4th Degree (founding member) of Knights of Columbus. He was a Building Committee Member for both St. Joseph Academy and St. Mary's Church of De Pere.
Respected by his peers, he was involved in many professional organizations on a local, state and national level. He was a member of Brown County Home Builders Association (BCHBA) since 1963, its President in 1969. In 1970 he was named the Wisconsin State Builder of the year. In 1971 he was named the President of Wisconsin Builders Association. In 1989 he was appointed by Governor Thompson to the State Multi-Family Code Council. He served as a BCHBA Chairman of Government Affairs Committee from 1997 through 2001. In 2006 he received the Builders Edge Award. In 2008 he received the BCHBA Lifetime Achievement Award.
He developed and sponsored the Learn to Ski Program for the East De Pere School system, touching the lives of almost 5000 kids over the last 16 years.
While many people will remember him for his professional accomplishments, most will remember him for his incredible zest for life!
Dad loved the Republican Party and was watching the debates this past week.
He inspired a family tradition of making booyah, canning fruits and vegetables, pressing apple cider, and making Belgian Trippe. He lived for summer parties at the farm including fireworks, giving truck rides, building bonfires, live music, making pies, eating s'mores and much more. And don't forget watching deer, stocking the pond with fish, meeting for hot chocolate at 2:30 on the ski hill, making popcorn in the van, and stopping for donuts. Our oldest, fondest memories include Dad listening to Bent Grass, Patsy Cline, Wayne King, etc. His favorite hobbies included skiing, spending time in the garden, canoeing, searching for eagles, watching kids play, eating together as a family and eating ice cream from the ice cream truck. He frequently reminded us "Life is good."
He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine, daughter Monica, his best friend, Al Vanden Heuvel, his siblings: Geraldine, Evelyn, Arnold, Arletta and Donna and son in law, Paul Baeten.
He is survived by his children: Tom (fiance Mary Lohius), Ann (Bossmeyer), Dave (Cyndy), Joan (Mark) Cavil, Mary, Betse, Mark (Paula), Janet (Matt) Secora, Rob (Lori) and family members-in-law Lyle LaPlante, Don Van Sistine, Rosey McMonagle, Loretta (Jim) Rock, Edgar Scray and Martha Geenen.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Katie (Jason) Dowdy, Jeff (fiance Krista Paul) Macco, David and Sara Bossmeyer, Jenny (Tim) Loar, Scott and Amanda Macco, Sara (Keith) Dexter, Luke Cavil, Emily, Allisondra, and Jacob Strenski, Kevin and Lizzey Wright, Andrea Baeten, Jesse, Tyler, Brianna Macco, Katelyn, Michelle and Tina Secora, Alex Willems, Kathy Webster-Macco, Mercedes Mc Cormick, Michael and Claudia Macco and great grandchildren: Reagan and Mckenzie Dowdy, Dontrell Hollimon, Kayden DeLeon, Remi and Hailey Dexter and his former wife, Charlotte. The family would like to thank Dr. Patel of Aurora Oncology. Dad held him in the highest regard. Thank you to the amazing men and women who took care of Dad's health for the last few years. And, thank you to the employees of Hillcrest who have been so instrumental in Dad being able to realize his visions, especially his 'right hand' person, Veronica Trofka.
Dad loved to read the thank you notes from the kids who participated in the Learn to Ski Program in East De Pere. As a thank you for the joy you gave to our Dad, the family is setting up a memorial fund for the Learn to Ski program in East De Pere. Details will be available through the online obituary.
