Obituary

On Friday, October 17, 2008, Mrs. Roland (Helen) Murphy, 78, put her trust in Jesus and now experiences the fullness of God's peace. Helen was born November 16, 1929, to Joseph and Ella (Ruben) Gille, the youngest of four children. Shortly after attending Green Bay East High School, she married the love of her life, Roland Murphy, who preceded her in death in 1995. As Roland grew his construction and insurance business, Helen ran the household with, eventually, ten children. In these lean years, Helen supplemented their income by working at H.C. Prange Co. and selling in-home products like Avon, Shaklee and Home Interiors. This allowed the children to receive a Catholic education, which she felt was extremely important. Throughout the school years, Helen readily volunteered for parish work. Among other things, she helped at St. Mary of the Angels roller rink, taught CCD and Bible school, supervised youth Cursillo weekends and was a lector and lay distributor at Resurrection Church. In 1964 and 1965, Helen and Roland hosted two foreign exchange students, Wolfgang Steinmann from Germany and Mario Coto from Costa Rica. The family is enriched by their lifetime friendship. Helen was particularly proud to help sponsor a large Vietnamese family to the U.S. in 1977, allowing them to live with her family until they could relocate. Helen arranged many memorable family get-togethers at holidays. She particularly loved decorating and candymaking at Christmas. Circling with the grandchildren to "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" was a cherished Christmas tradition. Helen treasured the friendships she made throughout her life and was deeply loyal to her friends. Helen was a proud person, but not pretentious. She never took herself too seriously nor did she ever forget their humble, early-married life. Her favorite activities included canning pickles at the "farm", playing gin, solving crossword puzzles and watching QVC. Over 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be keeping their beloved Grandmother in their thoughts and prayers. She is survived by her ten children and their spouses: Michael (Nancy); Patrick (Ann); Judy; Steve (Dawn); Sue (KW) Ray; Sherry (Pat) Parrish; Linda (Jeff) Gleason; Connie (Tom) Williamson; Joseph (Ginny); and Tony (Karla). She is further survived by her in-laws: Kip and Delores Murphy; Ron and Deanna Murphy; and Carol and Joe Challe. In addition, many nieces and nephews will remember her fondly. In eternity, she has joined her parents, brothers Roland and Gordy; her sister Yvonne; and their spouses Betty, Babe and Duke. The family would like to thank Unity Hospice for their incredible kindness and support during Helen's startling illness. In lieu of flowers, Helen encouraged your support for the homeless and for Resurrection Catholic Parish. Funeral arrangements, that she thoroughly prepared, are being handled by Ryan Funeral Home. A body's ache is laid to rest. Helen Murphy has joined the Best. As trumpets blare, the Angels sing. Another soul is with our King. Friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday October 21, 2008.
