Obituary

Herbert I. Buttrick (Herb), 77, of Green Bay, WI, passed away at his home on March 16, 2024. Herb was born July 31, 1946 in Boston, MA. He was preceded in death by his parents (Herbert I. Buttrick, Jr., and Elizabeth Hutchison Buttrick) and his brother Stewart (Cindy) Buttrick. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Connie (Toohill), his children Leigh Anne (Chad McKinney) and Harrison, his beloved grandson Max McKinney, his sister Kathy Michel (Wolf) of Clayton, NC, and many loving and supportive in laws, nieces, and nephews.

Herb graduated from Northport High School in Northport, NY, in 1965. With a low draft number, he was eager to attend college anywhere that would have him; that place was Lincoln College. Taking a bus from Times Square, NYC, to Lincoln, Illinois, Herb enrolled at Lincoln College, where he played on the soccer team. In 1967, he transferred to Murray State University in Murray, KY, where he graduated in 1969.

Herb's low draft number finally caught up with him in the summer of 1970, when he was drafted. He served in the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam and spent 12 months in Vietnam in 1971-72.

Herb made Springfield, IL, his home for many years. It was there he started his first business, The Office Store Company, which operated for fifteen years across three locations. He loved being a small business owner, used this platform to bring people together and create memorable events such the annual Secretary Day celebration and the Caddyshack Golf Tournament and fundraiser.

A night out at The Barrel Head in 1979 was a start of a wonderful journey when he met Connie. Herb and Connie were married June 27, 1981. Marrying Connie also meant he was marrying into the Toohil family, which came with 100+ family members.

Job opportunities relocated the Buttrick family to Green Bay, WI in 1996.

Herb's biggest success was his role as father to Leigh Anne and Harrison. He proudly embraced the titles of 'swim team parent' and 'dance dad'. He was extremely proud of his children, their accomplishments and the adults they are.

He loved sports–all of them–but especially the Green Bay Packers. He appointed himself as "Packer Fan recruiter" for his family in Illinois, and he was quite successful! You could always count on him to start the game day group chat. He will be missed extra on Sundays in the fall.

Herb's passions went beyond his family and sports–he loved people. He recognized that everyone has something interesting to contribute and loved fostering relationships. Herb's friends, his children's friends, and his colleagues have wonderful memories of Herb–whether it be a road trip, family dinners, phone calls, e-mails, happy hours or just hanging out on the deck or in the garage–he made everyone feel welcome and fostered an environment where everyone could stay as long as they wanted.

Herb's favorite things included music by Harry Chapin, Jimmy Buffett, and Chris Stapleton; Caribbean beaches; playing Spades; gardening; enjoying Wisconsin summers, particularly for grilling and tomato season; listening to Green Bay's 107.5 "The Fan"; indulging in McDonald's McRib and sundaes; savoring espresso; and going all out for Christmas celebrations, especially with stockings.

The family has decided to do a celebration of life at a later date. Details will be shared on Facebook.
