Obituary

Inger Johanne Kane (nee Freden) passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Inger was born in Gjøvik, Norway to Astrid (Haraldsen) and Sven Freden on March 10, 1943.

She and her parents emigrated to the United States in 1957 and settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin. On August 6, 1966, Inger married John (Jack) Kane and they began a beautiful life together.

Inger was an extremely dedicated wife and mother. When she wasn't taking care of her family, she generously gave her time and talent to others. An avid volunteer, Inger spent countless hours helping a variety of non-profit organizations in her community throughout her lifetime.

She answered phones at a crisis hotline, helped adults with developmental disabilities learn to read, cared for children at a group home for teenage mothers, offered care and companionship to unhoused women and for many years was active in her church.

Inger and Jack cherished their opportunities to travel, and she easily made friends everywhere they went. Her curious nature and genuine interest in others' stories and perspectives helped turn what might have been casual acquaintances into lifelong friends.

Inger loved art and interior design and was herself a talented painter and calligrapher. The homes she and Jack shared throughout the years were extremely well kept and tastefully decorated, featuring many of her own works along with pieces specifically chosen for the space. She also enjoyed expressing herself in the kitchen and always treated her family and friends to thoughtful, delicious meals. Special Norwegian cookies at Christmastime, chili for Packer game Sundays.. Inger would easily make even a simple meal memorable.

Inger was preceded in death by her parents, brothers-in-law Ken Vincent and Jim Kane and infant son Christopher. She is survived by her husband Jack, daughters Christine (Tina) Long and Meredith Shimp, sons-in-law Eric Long and Rick Shimp, and five grandchildren who she loved fiercely and bragged about often: Griffin, Mallory and Anna Shimp and Ryan and Garrett Long.

A private funeral service for the immediate family is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations in Inger's name to Paul's Pantry (Green Bay), St. John's Ministries (Green Bay) or a charity of your choice are greatly appreciated.
