Obituary

Janet E. Remmers, 74, of Allouez, passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning October 21, 2011. She was born January 26, 1937 in Jamestown North Dakota to the late Herman and Minnie Walters. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1955 and from Wartburg College, Waverly, IA in 1959 with a major in Social Work and Minor in Sociology. Janet also attended UWGB and University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Social Work Graduate Program. Janet married LeRoy T. Remmers on December 28, 1958 at St. John Lutheran Church in Jamestown ND. Pastor Remmers preceded her in death on July 6, 2009. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mark (Jane) Remmers, Ft. Collins, CO, and one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Jon) Jensen, Racine, WI, six grandchildren, Allison Remmers, Jill, Katie, Jon, Michael Remmers, Jose Jensen, and one step granddaughter, Sarah Gotlund. Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. LeRoy Remmers and one son, Paul Remmers. Jan viewed her professional career as her own "ministry", which included the field of adoption in Dubuque, IA, Crisis Intervention Counseling, Home Health Supervision, Marital, Family and Grief Counseling while employed at Family Services of Green Bay. In 1985, Jan developed and managed the Addiction Intervention Ministry for Lutheran Social Services of WI and the UP. Jan became the Outagamie County Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Specialist, serving in that position until her first retirement in 1999. After a brief period, Jan returned to Outagamie County as a consultant for two years. She returned to her career in 2001 as a part time counselor/group facilitator at CASA CLARE, Inc. , a residential treatment center for women in Appleton for three and a half years. Jan's community service included the following: past president of the Emergency Shelter Board of Appleton, receiving the volunteer of the year award in 1992. In addition, Jan served on the Fair Housing Council of Appleton, and on the ABC (A Better Chance for African American Youth) Board of Directors. Jan was also Past President of the Women's Club of De Pere. Jan considered it a privilege and honor to service her Lord by sharing with her spouse 42 years of Ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, becoming a part of each congregation and special ministries her spouse was called to serve. Jan always believed she was Blessed to be A Blessing to her family, friends and all she had an opportunity to serve. The family will greet friends and guests at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2811 Libal Street, Green Bay from 10:00 to 11:00 am Wednesday October 26, 2011. A Worship Celebration of Jan's Life will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at the church with Revs. Lori and Luther Swensen, officiating.
