Jean Gertrude Baeten Shaughnessy April 28, 1927 – March 29, 2026, Jean, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and nurse anesthetist, passed away peacefully at the age of 98, surrounded by her loving family.
Jean was born on April 28, 1927, in De Pere, Wisconsin, the only daughter in a family of seven children born to Peter and Mary Baeten. She graduated from nursing school at St. Mary’s in Green Bay, WI and anesthesia in Chicago, IL.
She had a long and dedicated career as a nurse anesthetist, serving in a variety of hospitals, including Story County Medical Center in Story City, Iowa, and Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Throughout her life, Jean called many places home, including Ames, Iowa, De Pere, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Jean had a deep love of history and reading, her favorite magazine was Smithsonian. She enjoyed tending to plants on her patio in the summer and caring for orchids in the winter. She was always happiest at family gatherings, where she especially loved holding and watching the little ones.
Jean was a woman of deep Catholic faith and cherished attending daily Mass at The Glen apartments, where she lived.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Patrick John Shaughnessy. She cherished her family deeply. She is survived by her seven children: Mary (Chuck Harley) Rees; Colleen (Bob) Brems; Jo Ann (Dave) Kane; Patrick (Sandra) Shaughnessy; Kathy Shaughnessy; Sara Hayes; and Michael (Cynde) O’Shaughnessy.
She is also survived by her 15 grandchildren: Brendan (Rebecca), Daniel (Amie), Michelle, Matt (Shaunette), Meghan, Tim (Brittany), Danny, Kate (Fares), Dalton (Cecelia), Nicholas, Jamie (Phil), Sean (Emily), Patrick (Marina), Conor, and Dylan; and 13 great-grandchildren: Jack, Harper, Mattie, Keegan, Quincy, Chase, Adam, Ryan, Leo, Roy, Patrick, Lillian, Rowan, and two brothers, Paul and Allen Baeten.
A memorial mass at Old St. Joseph Catholc Church, at St. Norbert College will be announced later. Jean will be laid to rest at Fort Howard Cemetery.
