Obituary

John Maurice Phillips, 99, of De Pere passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday June 3, 2025. John was born on August 26,1925, in Niagara, Wisconsin, to the late George and Cora (Lamers) Phillips. His life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and the enduring importance of family.

Growing up on a farm, John learned early the values of diligence and perseverance. His life took a pivotal turn when he was drafted into the Navy during World War II, where he bravely served his country and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. After his honorable discharge, John returned home and soon met the love of his life, Betty. They were united in marriage on July 31, 1946, and together they shared an incredible 62 years of love and companionship until her passing in 2008.

John dedicated 31 years of his life to Milprint, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. He was also actively involved in the Local Union 7-1203 and held many officer positions. He felt very strongly about the rights of workers and fostering a sense of community.

Beyond his professional life, John was a man of many passions. He found joy in the great outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or spending time at the shack with friends. He also enjoyed the challenge of crossword puzzles and cherished the moments spent on the golf course at Hilly Haven. However, his greatest pride and joy came from spending time with his wife and family. He treasured every moment with them.

John is survived by his children, David (Kathie) Phillips, Green Bay; Steven Phillips, De Pere; Randall (Julie) Phillips, Green Bay; Jean (David) Bebeau, De Pere; 11 grandchildren, Amy (Jamie) Ocheltree, Kelli (Josh) Stertz, Ryan (Meghan) Phillips, Joey (Sam) Haworth, Jacob (Laura) Phillips, Ben (Emily) Phillips, Tony (Nicole) Phillips, Betsy (Tony) Speel, John (Sophie) Bebeau, Cal Bebeau, Geri Lynn (Ryan) Laughlin, 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great- great granddaughter. He is also survived by his brother Donald Wittig and sisters-in-law Emily Wittig, Delores Brodhagen and Dorothy Duke.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty Phillips, son Paul Phillips, his parents George and Cora Phillips, sisters Isabell Rossi and Adelia Kerschner, brothers-in-law Barry Rossi, William Kerschner, Edsen Mayer, Kenneth Brodhagen, Harold Duke, sister-in-law Diane Mayer, and daughter-in-law Kathy Phillips.

John Maurice Phillips will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his adventurous spirit. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed. The burial will take place at South Lawrence Cemetery on August 23, 2025 at 1:00 P.M followed by a Celebration of Life to be held at the residence of Steven Phillips at 3:00 P.M where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable man he was.
