Obituary

John Schumerth, 91, passed away on Sunday December 14, 2008 at Rennes Nursing Home, De Pere. He was a former resident of De Pere, Allouez, St. Germain and Ft. Myers, FL. He was born in 1917 in De Pere, and was the youngest son of Frank and Emma Schumerth. In 1942, he married Marion Carlson at the Marine Base, Camp LeJune, North Carolina. John was a graduate of De Pere High School and St. Norbert College and received his commission after officer training in Quantico, Virginia. He served in World War II as a Captain in the 4th Marine Division and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for: "Heroic achievement in action against the enemy as a rifle company commander of a Marine division on SAIPAN and TINIAN ISLANDS, MARIANAS GROUP from 15 June to 1 August, 1944. On arriving ashore, Captain Schumerth took command of a rifle company which had suffered heavy casualties and had only one officer left. He reorganized it immediately for the attack as an effective unit and continued to lead his company against the enemy in a determined and aggressive manner. On numerous occasions he subjected himself to heavy enemy fire in order to better control his company and push forward in the face of determined enemy resistance. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." Mr. Schumerth was a member of St. Matthew Church, Allouez, and coached in Allouez Little League for several years. He was a representative of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and U.S. Royal Tire before operating his own tire shop in De Pere. Survivors include his wife, Marion (Carlson) Schumerth, one daughter, Laurie (James) Albers, Ashwaubenon; 3 sons, Bruce, John, Jr. (Cindy), De Pere, Dennis (Faye) Schumerth, Yorba Linda, CA, 8 grandchildren, Ann, Jeff, Peter, Elizabeth, Molly, Matthew, Danielle, David, and 8 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a special family member, Dianne. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Emma Schumerth, a son, Terry in 1957, brothers, Alfred, Herb, Joe, Alvin, Norbert, Harold, Leo, Ray, one sister, Rena Robinson, and 3 sisters-in-law, Esther Schumerth, Sylvia Schumerth and Charlotte Schumerth. Friends may call at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Allouez, on Thursday, December 18, 2008 from 10:00 am until 11:20 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated at 11:30 am Thursday at the church with Fathers Larry Seidl and Paul Ducharme officiating. Entombment in Allouez Mausoleum.
