Obituary

John H. Van Den Berg, Sr., 92 yrs. old, passed away peacefully in his home on August 17, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. John was born to the late John W. & Marguerite (Williamsen) Van Den Berg on August 14, 1930 in Van's Valley where he later raised his own family and lived out the rest of his years. John served in the United States Army. On September 29, 1951, he married his beautiful bride, Barbara L. (Blohm), from Seymour. Together they raised eight children and were blessed with 4 wonderful sons-in-law, 3 amazing daughters-in-law, a Brazilian daughter and granddaughter, 27 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. He was a heavy machine operator and at 89 years old, could still crawl up into his loader and level a yard. John was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and enjoyed attending mass regularly. Some of the greatest memories involved cooking breakfast for his family on Sunday mornings after church. All of John's grandchildren would like you to know the memories of riding around in his dump truck, getting rides in the bucket of his payloader, eating candy bars, ice cream and chocolate malts, baking cinnamon rolls and bread, special deliveries of fresh baked banana bread, stacking wood, earning a dollar for every tooth we let him pull, and a dollar for our birthdays, and the sound of his voice when he would sing in church will live in our minds and hearts forever. Michael Metoxen, especially, will miss his best friend, sports buddy, sign-in partner, and sleep overs at Grandpa's. To Grandpa, we say "I love ya!" and "We'll see you later". Until then, we'll be "fine as frog's hair". John is survived by his sister, Carol (Donny) Smith, sister-in-law, Dot Van Den Berg and cousin/lifelong friend, Mel (Lou) Van Den Berg. Children: Dee (Joe) Van Hoof, John (Cindy) Van Den Berg Jr., Lia (Joe) Murphy, Shelly (George) Bastien, Quinn (Cheryl) Van Den Berg, Scott (Connie) Van Den Berg, and Shawn (Larry) Vanden Heuvel.
