Obituary

Joyce Konkle, 84, Green Bay, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born August 21, 1937, in Freedom the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Van Treek) Gerritts. After high school she married Urban (Urb) Konkle on October 6, 1955, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church calling Freedom home and started to raise a family. Joyce drove school bus for the Freedom and Pulaski school districts for many years, always making sure she was driving the bus for her children's sports activities. She then worked at the Shopko General Office and Bay Park Square store until her retirement in 2015. Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved weekends spent camping with Urb. She enjoyed bowling and playing in a De Pere fast pitch softball league where she was a pitcher until age 45. She looked forward to regular get-togethers with her siblings and friends playing card games. Joyce also enjoyed counted cross stitch and crocheting. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching Packer games but she had an affinity for the Milwaukee Brewers and faithfully took in each game. She also enjoyed attending many of her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's events. Joyce was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She has been a volunteer her entire life, as she was influential in starting and coaching girls' softball in Freedom; she was a girl scout and a boy scout leader; she's a charter member of the Freedom VFW auxiliary where she held several officer positions, including Chaplain until 2022; she was the treasurer of her church's St Vincent De Paul branch and was a communion distributor. But her biggest volunteering joy was assisting with the children at House of Hope where she would be able to take care of babies like only a grandmother can. She was even nominated twice for the adult volunteer award at the WPS Volunteer Awards brunch. Joyce is survived by her children, Randy (Patti) Konkle, Oconto Falls; Rick (Sue) Konkle, Kaukauna; Marg (Al) Van Rossum Pickerel; Paul (Tina) Konkle, DePere; her nine grandchildren: Aaron (Sara) Van Rossum, Hammond; Jeremy Konkle, Oconto Falls; Jesse (Vicki) Konkle, DePere; Adam (Jen) Van Rossum, Appleton; Jenna (Jordan) Weigt, West Bend; Tonya (Zach) Bunn, Gillett; Dylan Konkle, Bend, OR; Trevor (Taylor) Konkle, Suamico; Ally (Cody) Van Rossum, Kaukauna. She is further survived by her six great-grandchildren: Anna, Ella & Morgan Van Rossum, Emalee & Isaac Bunn and Adeline Weigt; sisters, Jan Thyes and Carol Eastman and sister-in-law Dorothy Gerritts; her dog, Zoey; and many nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband, her great granddaughter, Parklynn Van Rossum, parents, parent-in-laws, siblings, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Visitation will be at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 9th Street, Green Bay, Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 9:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 A.M with Fr. Patrick Beno presiding. The family is deeply grateful to Joyce's doctors and nurses for the excellent and compassionate care she received at Bellin Cancer Center and Rennes Health Care of DePere. They are also grateful for the many family members and friends who continued to visit throughout her illness, especially over the last couple of months. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her name to House of Hope 1660 Christiana St., Green Bay WI 54303. Mom, we love you and will miss you tremendously, but we are happy you are reunited with your Mom who you lost when you were only 12.
