Katherine Mary Christman passed away at Bellin Hospital on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 after a brief but intense battle with cancer.
Born July 9, 1943 in Manitowoc, Wi. to Doris (Olson) and Henry Christman, Kate lived a full and varied life spending her time volunteering and educating. She graduated from Menasha High School in 1961, then attended Milwaukee County Hospital where she earned an X-Ray Technician certificate. Kate worked in Denver, CO and New York, NY as a technician then joined VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) where she helped disadvantaged youths in Los Angeles, CA and the Navajo Reservation, AZ. In 1970, she moved back to Wisconsin and worked at Taylor Home in Racine as a child care advocate where she met her husband Jim Seroogy.
Jim and Kate married in 1971. Following their nuptials, they moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario and continued their child care work with Browndale International. After their time there, the two moved back to Racine in 1973 and organized and operated a short term, shelter care unit through Taylor Home. Following that, Kate and Jim moved back to Northeastern Wisconsin where she taught parent education classes at Brown County Mental Health Center.
In 1977 she graduated from UW-Green Bay with her B.A. in Community Sciences. In 1982, they welcomed into their life through adoption, their first son, Max. A year later, they adopted Ana, their daughter from Honduras. In 1985 their second son, Peter, was adopted, completing their family.
Kate was a very active member of every community she was in. She served on the Southern Door County School District School Board for four years. At Algoma High School, she was a coach and assistant for good friend David Loos for the school's Forensics program and One Act Play organization for many years.
Kate was an active member and advocate of community theatre, working on stage and behind the scenes for Evergreen Theatre, Green Bay Community Theatre, Next Door Theatre and the theatre program at UWGB.
Mom was our leader, advisor, questioner, critic, supporter, advocate, mentor, moral compass, and friend. Her lasting legacy will be her intense dedication to her children, near and far, her grandchildren and Jim. She loved to travel, garden, satisfy her endless curiosity, and be with family.
Kate was preceded in death by her Mother, Doris; Father, Henry; and Brother-In-Law Jack Stroemer. She is survived by her Husband, Jim Seroogy; children Max (Melli) Seroogy, Ana (Pierre) Price, and Peter (Laura) Seroogy. And her grandchildren, Mia & Madeline Seroogy; Adrian & Layla Price; and Jackson & Grant Seroogy. Along with her siblings Elizabeth (Dave) Birling, Mike (Carol) Christman, Sue (Bob) Glisczinski, and Mark (Joan) Christman.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the ICU at Bellin Hospital for their dedicated and attentive care during Kate's stay.
There will be a reception celebrating Kate's life at St. Norbert College's Michels Commons (100 Grant St, De Pere) on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 2:00- 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Menasha High School's Women of '61 Scholarship Program; of which Kate was a member. Ryan Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mom was an incredible influence on all of us, and we are all stronger and better for having her in our lives. We will miss her.
