Obituary

Keith Patrick Vanden Avond, 65, De Pere, passed away July 3, 2021, following a series of health complications. The son of Bernard "Ben" and Patricia (Winnekin) Vanden Avond was born on January 3, 1956. Keith graduated from Reedsville High School in 1974 and served in the United States Army so he could give his mother the $4,000 signing bonus. The majority of his time was spent on the Czechoslovakian Border Patrol. He was a 1985 graduate of UWGB, and it was during his time there he met Lisa Freis. On April 26, 1986, Keith and Lisa married at St. Lawrence Church in Stangelville. Together, they raised three children, who Keith was fiercely proud of. His years of traveling to watch soccer and baseball were "the best of his life." He regularly said he was the luckiest man in the world. He was "Rich Uncle Keith" to his many nieces and nephews, always slipping a dollar when he'd see them. Keith loved nothing more than cooking for big groups of friends and family, especially after the kids' sleepovers, family holidays or when folks came to town to see the Packers. Keith was a natural salesman, and had a successful career in real estate, mergers and acquisitions. In the last decade, Keith helped in development for the Mile of Music and volunteered for the Kiwanis Club of De Pere, the Veterans Treatment Court and Alcoholics Anonymous. All of these groups meant a great deal to him. Keith is survived by his wife, Lisa; children Benjamin, Joseph and Katie (Kory) Guns; and grandson, Porter. He is further survived by his siblings, Barb (Howie) Pritzl, Mary Kay (Donald "Jake") Maertz, and Sue (Don) Haese; three Godchildren, Alison, Collin and Brandon; Lisa's entire family, who loved him dearly; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Pat; parents-in-law Wally and Helen (Welch) Freis; brother, Mike (Brenda) Vanden Avond; siblings-in-law Lori Freis, Bert Zylstra and David Schnur; and great-nephew Leonidas. Family and friends may visit at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. A short prayer service will conclude the evening at 7:00 p.m. with Vicar Rodger Patience officiating. Visitation will continue at Old St. Joseph Catholic Church on the St. Norbert College Campus on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Be advised that there is construction on Reid Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Father Richard Getchel and Deacon Kevin De Cleene officiating. The service will be live streamed from the Ryan Funeral Home Facebook page. Full Military Honors will follow the Mass. Burial will take place at Allouez Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be established in Keith's name at St. Norbert College. The Vanden Avond family would like to extend special thanks to Keith's good friend Mike Sheedy for his unwavering support.
