IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry Dean
Maples
July 26, 1946 – September 15, 2024
Larry D. Maples, 78, De Pere, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay. He was born July 26, 1946, in Sturgeon Bay to the late Raymond and Phyllis (Buehrens) Maples.
Larry was a 1964 graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School. He attended UW Madison, earning a degree in business and accounting.
After his return from Thailand, where he served as a cook in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he married his high school sweetheart Nancy Knutson on December 30, 1967. Their delayed honeymoon consisted of a three-month tour of the West Coast in a VW bus.
After passing his CPA exam, Larry worked as a public accountant in the state of Washington. They then returned to Appleton, Wisconsin, where he joined Shenck & Associates (now CLA). The majority of his career was spent working for small family run manufacturing business as CFO. These included Zwicker Knitting Mills in Appleton and TriEnda Corp. in Portage, WI. Larry was very proud of the work he did at Peterson Builders, Inc. in Sturgeon Bay, by supporting the local shipbuilding industry. He aimed to keep the industry alive by planning a transition of ownership that sadly did not succeed. Yet, he and many who knew him, are proud of his intention, courage, and integrity. A consummate salesman, he relished the opportunity to sell vessels abroad, during a global sales tour that included Italy, Denmark, and Russia. Throughout his career, he and Nancy have lived in Sturgeon Bay, Madison, Tacoma, Appleton, Portage, and finally De Pere. In each location, they forged wonderful friendships. Above all Larry was so very proud of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, children; Katherine Maples, and Jeffrey (Kimberly) Maples. Grandchildren; Samantha, Ashley, Taylor, Rachel, and Abigail. Siblings; Roger (Nancy) Maples, and Vern (Lea) Maples. Larry is further survived by Nancy's family; Jerry (Mo) Knutson, Judy (Tom) Leonhard, and Sam (Ann) Knutson. Nieces and nephews; Stuart (Karen) Maples, Phillip (Janel) Maples, Curtis Maples, Julie (Dan) Weiberdink, Shawn (Julie) Greaves, Kurt (Kristin) Knutson, Kris (Ana) Knutson, Kimberly Peil, and Courtney (Greg) Lindstrom.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings, Cliff Maples, William Maples, Pamela (Bruce) Notman, Serena Maples, as well as Nancy's parents, Marie B. (Tenor) and Norman Knutson, and her sister Sandy (Arthur) Greaves.
