IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leland "Putski" H.
Danforth
May 27, 1948 – January 27, 2023
Leland "Putski" H. Danforth (74) of Oneida, Wisconsin passed away on January 27, 2023. Leland was born on May 27, 1948 in Green Bay, Wisconsin; he was the son of Mildred (Skenandore) and Howard Danforth. Leland was a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Leland's Oneida name was Lolihwa'khat, meaning he has a lot of information/ many messages. Leland grew up in the DePere-Oneida area, graduating from West DePere High School. Following high school graduation, Leland held various employment positions including foundry work and alcohol and drug prevention work. Later in life Leland held various positions "working hard for the Oneida People". Two of Leland's tribal positions included serving a term on the Oneida Business Committee and just prior to retirement, driving for Oneida transit.
While Leland was known to his family as Leland or Lee, the majority of friends and community members knew him as Putski. The nickname was given to him by a young man many decades ago and the nickname stuck. Putski enjoyed participating in various outdoor activities and had an ongoing love of music and reading throughout his life. Putski was a skilled canasta player, canasta was something he could enjoy with his mom, as well as his sisters and other family members. Later in life Putski enjoyed visiting with others, sharing stories as well as listening to stories and updates on what was happening with family and friends.
Leland is survived by his sisters, Barbara Benson of Windsor, Ontario and Bernice Vega of Greenfield, Wisconsin. Leland has a full family of nieces, nephews as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. That love was returned to him by his family and he was held in high regard as a Brother and Uncle. Leland/ Putski is further survived by a family of friends and community members who cared deeply for him. Special friends, Kathy Danforth and Bob Brown were very much a part of his everyday life and their dedication to Putski cannot be overstated. Putski's other lifelong friends included Randy Cornelius, Larry Cornelius, and Art Skenandore. Putski was also blessed to have in his extended family adopted nieces and nephews who he cared for very much.
Leland is preceded in death by both of his parents Mildred and Howard, his sister, Gladyce Brezezinski and his brother-in-law, Gerald Benson.
