Leona Doxtator Smith, Town of Oneida, born January 19, 1920 in Oneida, WI passed away Sunday morning in her sleep after a courageous struggle with cancer. She was a master Wisconsin Oneida Language Speaker and acknowledged as an Oneida Nation National treasure.
Leona is a daughter of the late Hyson and Martha (House) Doxtator. She married Peter Smith, who preceded her in death. She enjoyed her time doing crafts and sewing projects.
Leona is survived by her three children: Peter Smith, Seymour, Sylvia (Ted) Graves, De Pere and Robert (Susanne) Smith, Virginia; her nine grandchildren: Daniel W. Graves, Todd P. Graves, Ted Graves Jr, Sheila Smith, Cheryl Smith, Michael Smith, Tyler Fabricius, Cyrus Fabricius, and Mariah Fabricius; 11 great grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister Bertha Mae Bouchet, nieces, and nephews.
Leona is preceded in death by her parents, husband Peter Smith, and siblings: Pearl Krug, Edith Bakke, Hudson Doxtator, Antone Doxtator, and Jane Doxtator.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 N. Tenth St, De Pere from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Oneida singers at 6:30 PM and a Prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Holy Apostle Church, Oneida from 9:30 AM until time of Mass. A Celebration of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM with Rev.
