Lois Marie Nicks died peacefully on May 18, 2022 at the age of 95, but she said that she was "almost 96." Lois was born in Dubuque, Iowa on April 25, 1927 to Frank and Florence (Loes) Schlueter, one of six children. She graduated from Visitation Academy and Clarke College in Dubuque and the St. Joseph School of Medical Technology in Kansas City, Missouri.
Lois worked for 25 years as a medical technologist at the University of California hospital in San Francisco, California finishing her career as Supervisor in the Hematology Department. She was a member of the Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society.
Lois married Mel J. Nicks in 1975 and moved to De Pere, Wisconsin. They were happily married until Mel's death in 1990. Lois and Mel traveled extensively, often in the smallest of travel trailers named True Grit, and enjoyed the company of many friends.
In addition to her husband, Mel, Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Anna Mae Nicks, Sister Cecile Marie (Dorothy Schlueter) and Sister Mary Carolyn (Rita Schlueter) of the Sisters of Saint Francis, and Mary Arant, and her brother, James Schlueter.
She is survived by her four stepchildren, Andrew Nicks, Stephen Nicks, Joseph Nicks, and Susan Nicks Ponto and their families, and by the children and families of her sister Mary and her brother James.
The family expresses their appreciation for the exceptional care provided to Lois by the staffs at New Perspective Senior Living, Unity Hospice and Dr. Stephen Asma during her last illness.
Ryan Funeral Home, De Pere will be assisting in funeral arrangements. Burial will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Lois' life will take place at a later date.
