Obituary

Lorna Rae (Hooper) Wood, 91, Green Bay, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2023, with her loving daughter at her bedside. She was born in Walla Walla, WA on August 15, 1932, to Robert and Jewel (Weir) Hooper. Lorna attended the University of Idaho where she was swept off her feet by the man of her dreams before she could complete her degree. Lorna married Charles Dallas "Dal" Wood in Moscow, ID on June 8th, 1953. Dal was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps the very next day and they raised their family in whatever state the Marine Corps stationed them, including California, Wisconsin, Virginia and North Carolina. After 25 years of service to the Marine Corps, they moved their family back to Wisconsin in 1978, where Lorna earned a Bachelor's Degree in Literature at UW Green Bay. Lorna and Dal owned and operated Wood Financial until they retired in 2002.

Lorna was a loving wife and devoted mother of five boys and one girl. With Dal overseas for much of her child-rearing age, she often had to fill the role of father as well. But her kind soul and loving nature was frequently exploited by her mischievous children, who would ultimately pay the price "when Dad gets home." Lorna loved attending her kids' sports and swim meets. She managed to be at every game and get them to every lesson. She had an exuberant sense of humor and would frequently fall into fits of laughter so intense, she couldn't speak for several minutes. The rest of the room couldn't help but join in, which would only escalate her laughter. When she wanted to be heard during a family gathering, she would simply raise her hand until she had everyone's undivided attention.

Lorna visited the library on a regular basis, sometimes reading two or three books a week. She was a talented piano player and had a beautiful singing voice. Lorna enjoyed many activities, such as bowling, scrap-booking, and finishing crossword puzzles, always in ink with perfect handwriting. She was a whiz at Jeopardy and a fierce card-player. She and Dal enjoyed traveling to far away places: Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, and Alaska. They packed the family and trailer for cross-country trips, visiting every state to see the Grand Canyon, the Smoky Mountains, the Giant Redwood Forest, Disney World, Disneyland, Plymouth Rock, Cooperstown, the Washington Monument, Mexico, countless beaches, mountains, rivers, and campgrounds from coast to coast…even to Montreal, Quebec to watch the 1976 Olympics.

In her later years, Lorna loved the peace and quiet of the family cottage on Huber Lake, where she would watch the hummingbirds while completing a puzzle. When Dal passed away in December 2021, after 68 years of marriage, Lorna had the look of a wife patiently awaiting the return of her hero. When asked if she needed anything, the answer was always a soft, "No," with a smile. Visitors would often find her with his picture on her lap, looking out the window wondering when he would come back for her and once again, swoop her off her feet…this time, forever.

Lorna is survived by her children, Thomas (Patricia) Wood, De Pere, WI; Michael (Peggy) Wood, Oneida, WI; Douglas (Lori) Wood, Green Bay, WI; Margaret "Peg" (Tony) Brault, Green Bay, WI; Stephen Wood, Eau Claire, WI; and David (Mark) Wood, New Bern, NC. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Laurel Purdy, Brent (Jennifer) Wood, Benjamin (Carly) Wood, Nicholas Wood, Cassandra (fiancé Jack Hennessy) Wood, Becky (Alex) Couch, Dallas (Allyssa) Wood, Sam Wood, Alex Wood, Corey Wood, Christopher Wood, Collin Wood, Ryan (fiancé Parker Perrault) Dudek, Maddie (Joe) Tomandl, Nick Brault, Noah Brault, and one great-grandchild, Caroline Canary, with another due in three weeks, Asher Couch. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Molly (Joe) Pool, her brother-in-law Gunther "Gump" Edelmann, her sister-in-law Barbara Wood, and many nieces and nephews.
