Obituary

Margaret A. (Lindstrom) Cowles, 84, of Allouez, passed away Sunday afternoon October 24, 2010 at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, Milwaukee. The daughter of the late Enard and Ada (Keene) Lindstrom was born October 1, 1926 in Escanaba, MI. She was a graduate of Escanaba High School, Class of 1944. On September 17, 1949 she married Robert L. Cowles, Jr. at Christ Episcopal Church, Green Bay. Mrs. Cowles was an active member of the community. She was a volunteer, Past President of the Green Bay YWCA, and the Women of Vision. She was involved with the Service League of Green Bay and the Antiquarian Society for many years. Margaret was a soloist in the choir at Christ Episcopal Church, Green Bay. Mrs. Cowles was very artistic, enjoyed painting, needlework and playing the piano. She operated the Needle Attic in De Pere. Mrs. Cowles was active in the Door County Peninsula Arts Association for many years. She was an actress at Green Bay Community Theater. Margaret was involved for over fifty years in the PEO Chapter. As a Goldwater Girl she became very active in the Republican Party in Wisconsin for many years. In 1988, Margaret received a new heart at St. Lukes Hospital in Milwaukee, and most recently celebrated her twenty-second anniversary of the transplant. She was highly regarded with the staff and nurses of the hospital as one of their longest surviving heart transplant patients. She was an active member of the Bellin Cardiomyopathy Support Group. The gift of life she received with the transplant was never taken for granted and she dedicated much of her time supporting those as fortunate. Her family includes her husband, Robert L. Cowles, Jr., Allouez, her children, Senator Robert L. Cowles, Allouez, James G. (Sharon) Cowles, Suamico, David F. (Lisa) Cowles, De Pere, grandchildren, Kelly, Robert and Emily, step-grandchildren, Jon and Katie, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Lindstrom, and dear friends who were as close as sisters, Helen Bie and Ruth McCoy. Friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday October 27, 2010. Visitation will continue after 10:00 am Thursday at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, De Pere until time of service. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 am Thursday at the church with Father Eric Mills, officiating. Entombment in Allouez Masoleum.
