Obituary

Mark T. Heffernan passed away on April 27, 2015, at the age of 37, after a year long battle with melanoma. Mark was born on January 13, 1978 to Thomas and Ruth (Powers)Heffernan. He graduated from De Pere High School in 1996 and St. Norbert College in 2000, becoming a CPA shortly after. He worked at Wipfli, LLP as an auditor for 4 years. He then joined VerHalen, Inc as an accounting manager, later becoming CFO. He was a member of the Northeastern Wisconsin Chapter of Financial Executives International, and was just about to begin a term on the Chapter's Board when he fell ill. On August 7, 2004, Mark married his wife Melissa in Green Bay, WI. The two welcomed a daughter, Keira, on April 23, 2008. Mark was a very loving father and husband. He was a passionate sports fan, who loved attending sporting events as well as cheering on his favorite teams, especially the Badgers and the Kansas Jayhawks. Mark also enjoyed golfing and playing basketball. Mark is survived by his wife, Melissa (Brooks); his daughter, Keira; parents, Thomas and Ruth (Powers) Heffernan; maternal aunt, Catherine Powers (Durand, WI); paternal uncle and aunt, Tim and Barb Heffernan (Durand, WI); cousin, Jake Heffernan. Survivors also include father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Eileen Brooks (Plymouth, WI); brothers--in-law, David (Amanda) Brooks, Michael (Allison) Brooks, and Christopher Brooks; nephew, Elliott Brooks. Mark was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Patrick and Phyllis Heffernan; maternal grandparents, Martin and Marian Powers; maternal aunt, Cleo Powers. Visitation will be held at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday May 1, 2015. Visitation will continue after 9:00 am on Saturday, at Union Congregational Church, 716 S. Madison St. Green Bay, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. Rev. Bridget Flad will officiate. Burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, De Pere. A celebration of Mark's life will follow. In lieu of flowers, Mark's wishes were for a memorial fund to be established for his daughter's education. Melissa, Tom, and Ruth would like to thank their family and friends for their care and support, as well as Mark's employer, VerHalen, Inc. Special thanks to the following people for the superior care that Mark received during his battle with cancer: St. Vincent ICU staff, Dr. Alshahrouri, Dr. Mark Gardon, Green Bay Oncology Staff, Dr. Michael Volk, Kristen Rodeheaver, MSN, FNPBC, Radiation Oncology Specialists staff, Dr. James Leenstra, Pam O'Neil, RN, APNP, and the Unity Hospice staff.
