Marshall King Moss, 84, was released from his earthly pain in the early morning hours of May 19, 2016, at home, in the arms of his loving wife. One of the gifts of time is that you have the opportunity to write your own obituary. The red-tailed hawk is Marshall's animal spirit and so he begins thus:
The hawk has flown into the sky. I was born in Milwaukee on April 19, 1932, the son of Walter King and Barbara Vance Moss. I was a loving brother to Barbara Moss Schulenberg.
Educated in the Milwaukee and Waukesha schools, I started college at Williams College in pre-med but heard the call to serve my country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. The years on the destroyer U.S.S. Prichett from 1950-1954 were some of the most memorable times of my life. Some of the greatest joys of my life were reuniting with shipmates and being able to go to numerous annual reunions across the country. I will never forget my band of brothers.
After Williams, I started undergraduate studies in music at Northwestern University. After my mother suddenly died, I moved home to Waukesha to live with my father and finish at Carroll College. I experimented going into the seminary at McCormick Theological and Garrett, well, probably not worth mentioning as it didn't last! I later completed a graduate degree in vocal performance at Northwestern University.
In 1963, I married the mother of my children, Vicki Scheffel. I am so proud of my sons Jonathan (Yoko Onishi) and Christopher (Sarah), and am thankful that I lived long enough to see them become successful and good men. To our grandchildren, Grace, Cooper, Satchel, and Mercer, you are good people and Poppi is very proud of you all.
I taught at Carthage College for one year, which was followed by 37 joyful years at St. Norbert College. Coming to St. Norbert was a very good choice. I have had many accomplishments in my life but of all of them, I am most proud of the many students at St. Norbert College whose lives I helped to shape.
I have had the good fortune to perform a great deal and be affiliated with many arts organizations. Even though being trained primarily as a vocalist, I loved being a church choir director, having conducted at Racine Baptist, First United Methodist, and Union Congregational Church. I also sang regularly at the Temple in Kenosha for the High Holy Days. The people I met along the way will never be forgotten.
In 1985, I realized a life-long dream by receiving my pilot's license. Many happy hours were spent up in the air and at many an air show. A favorite past-time was sitting at any airport with the scanner radio on.
In 1991, I married my soulmate, Elaine. We carved out a beautiful life in the woods of the Machickanee and became stewards of the animal kingdom. You are my angel and I will love you forever.
I will be survived by many relatives whom I love greatly, and more friends than there are stars in the sky. Thanks to all of you for all of the great times.
I am so grateful to Dr. Gail Carels, Dr. Rolf Lulloff, not only doctors but friends, and everyone affiliated with Prevea. To Dr. "St. John" Seccombe and the amazing heart team at St. Vincent Hospital, the team at Unity Hospice, especially Julie, Cheryl, and Gloria, thank you for your compassion and care.
These past months, many of you have asked, "What can we do for you?" My reply is, "Live a good life."
