Mary Ann (Geurts) Baeten, 87, De Pere, passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of August 29, 2021. The daughter of Leo and Marie (Vander Heiden) Geurts, Mary Ann was born on February 24, 1934. On July 8, 1953, Mary Ann married Harold "Harry" Baeten at St. Mary's Catholic Church in De Pere.
Mary Ann lived a remarkable life. Alongside Harry, her husband of over 60 years, she nurtured a home full of laughter, delicious food, and many memories. She was a talented artist and her craft shows were an annual pilgrimage for those in search of the perfect handmade Christmas gift. Her crocheted tablecloths are fondly treasured by those lucky enough to have received one as a wedding gift. She carefully tended a huge garden of strawberries and flowers, which she dried for her works of art. Mary Ann loved her girlfriends whom she had known since high school. She gave of her time and talents to help others, whether it was making food for Paul's Pantry, working on missionary trips, flippin' burgers for the Flamingo Tournament, or always making sure there were sandwich fixings for a hungry grandchild. Mary Ann was the best schmear player around... yes, even better than her late husband, Harry, and she could solve the most challenging of crosswords up until her last day.
Mary Ann was pragmatic, yet generous; she had simple tastes, but always stylish; she knew what to do, but let people make their own decisions; she was the center of our family, but avoided the spotlight. While she was an important part of many lives, she stayed true to herself until the end. She was strongly devoted to her family, and because of her and her long marriage to Harry, raising the family together, we hold our families close.
Perhaps the most significant accomplishment is her large, healthy, and loving family. Mary Ann is survived by her eight children: Betsy (Larry), Pete, Ann (David), Mark (Fi), Tom (MJ), Bill (Colleen), Mary (Eric), and Jason (Peter); 20 grandchildren: Harry, Rose, Josh (Christina), Caleb (Katie), Andrew (Victoria), Britta (Jeff), Allie (Saul), Mia, Anna, Andrea (Erik), Kevin, Lizzey, Austin, Faith, Emily, Ben, Sam, Amelia, Hattie, and Ollie; five great-grandchildren: Addison, Kennedy, Liesl, Warner, and Adeline; daughter-in-law Betse Macco; brother Ken (Ann); brother-in-law Bob; sister-in-law Donna; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold; parents Leo and Marie; sister Rosalie (Gene); sister Nancy (Darwin); sister Lynn; parents-in-law Peter and Hattie; son Paul; brothers-in-law Jerry and Roy, and sisters-in-law Mary (Chip), Helen (Don), and Ruth (Loren).
A celebration will be held in Mary Ann's honor at a future date.
In lieu of flowers--and in honor of Mary Ann's dedication to nurturing a home and continually providing for others--please direct donations to the House of Hope of Green Bay, an organization dedicated to providing women and children a place to call home.
We will remember you at every meal we share — and at every wedding or newborn we celebrate, with every winter cardinal that appears, and in every purple iris that blooms — not a single day shall pass when we do not cherish your legacy of joy and love.
