IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Virginia
Bougie
November 14, 1929 – January 2, 2023
Mary V. Bougie died Monday, January 2, 2023, after a recent diagnosis of abdominal cancer. She was born November 14, 1929, in De Pere, Wisconsin. From Thanksgiving to her passing, Mary enjoyed the care and company of her husband, children, and many grandchildren with support from Unity Hospice, Green Bay.
The Sweet Adelines in heaven have a new baritone. In addition to barbershop chorus and quartet singing, Mary was in the former Enna Memorial Choir during high school and beyond, several church choirs including many years organizing the St. Joseph Church, now Our Lady of Lourdes, funeral choir. A woman of service, Mary ran a bike parade for neighborhood children during the polio epidemic, petitioned for sidewalks to improve safety, and led Brownie or Junior Scout troops for all three daughters. She served in various officer positions for the local chapter of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and the church council, delivered Meals on Wheels, and headed funding for the soccer club that preceded the varsity sport at West De Pere High School.
A talented seamstress, Mary sewed clothing for her family and did alterations both in her private business and for The White Store. After her children were grown, she sewed draperies for Van Sistine Flooring and altered many bridal and bridesmaid dresses for Elaine's House of Brides in Green Bay. Before starting her family, Mary worked in the office for the former Dantz Roofing Company after earning a bookkeeping certificate from Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College. She was a 1947 graduate of East De Pere High School.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband Edward, whom she married on April 22, 1950. They raised their children in the house they built: Linda (James) O'Keefe, Thomas (Kristin) Bougie, Debra Bougie (Jeffrey Geisler), David Bougie, Michael (Kris) Bougie, Annette (Jeffrey) Look, and Paul (Rebecca) Bougie. She loved and will be missed by her 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary is also survived by sisters-in-law Kate Riordan Bertrand, Christine Bougie, and Mary Krautkramer, and brother and sister-in-law Clifford and Shirley Bougie.
She was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Josephine Bertrand, her brothers James (Vivian), Richard (Ruth), and Thomas Bertrand and sister Jean Moreau; her father- and mother-in-law Joseph and Rose Bougie; in-laws: Vernon and Kay Bougie, Betty and Gary Bellin, Larry Bougie, and Jack Krautkramer; and other family and dear friends.
Mary made sure her sons knew how to cook and show compassion and that her daughters knew that smart, strong women make good life partners. We will fondly remember the pillow lottery; chore charts; bowling for breakfast duties; ping pong and pool tournaments; Scrabble, Sheepshead, and Bridge; time at Uncle Larry's 40 and family camping trips at Hartman Creek State Park. Mom, we'll miss your famous chocolate chip cookies, your handmade gifts of crocheted towels and dishcloths, infectious laugh, and warm hugs. Family life won't be the same without you.
