IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maxine
Elm
March 29, 1931 – March 28, 2023
Maxine Louise Elm, 91, Oneida, WI, walked on to spirit world surrounded by her family and friends on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. The amazing daughter of Mildred H. (Powless) Elm and Timothy J. Elm was born in Milwaukee on March 29, 1931.
Maxine grew up in Milwaukee and Oneida. She attended West Division High School. She courageously raised 10 children and survived two marriages. At age 40 she completed her high school GED, got her drivers license, and enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in counseling and went on to become the first Native American Indian Counselor at Marquette University. She enjoyed working with young college students and supporting native culture. She had a resolve and passion for breaking stereotypes about native people through education. She loved traveling across the state and country recruiting young high school graduates to experience successful college life. In her later years she was a member of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council and an instrumental board member of the Indian Summer Festivals, Inc. She loved music and especially loved her kids and grandkids, always encouraging them to follow their dreams.
She is survived by her children, Suzanne, Larry(Bette), Bobbie(Chic), Renee(John), Kathleen(Bill), Andrew(Marie), Sherry(Joel), 24 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Maxine was preceded in death by three of her sons, Raymond, Richard and Michael along with her siblings, Theodore, John, Edward, Richard and Patricia.
